Black screen where log in screen should be

Post by cudayne »

I took a ride on teh wild side again today i tride too install nvidia dravers on my mint 12 rc. when i tried the additional drivers thing it failed. SO i tried using synaptic. that seemed too work. then black listed the navue driver an purged them as the walk through on here said too.

I also ran sudo nvidia-xconfig. Then rebooted when i rebooted the computer it booted into a black screen where the user name an login should be.

SO did i hose my system? if not how do i go about fixing it. I have kubuntu 11.10 installed also.

Did you try to boot with the "nomodeset" boot option?

Same problem here, with a few differences:

I was using the latest Mint12KDE with all the latest updates. I tried the recommended addition driver, which failed, so I turned it off and went the bed. Next morning, Mint still started up fine, and I think it was only after running nvidia-xconfig that the black screen problem came up. I've now had to boot using the CD.
