HELP: M12_KDE64Live: black screen with only mousepointer
after about 60% of the splash-startup the screen goes all black with just a (working) mousepointer.
if I go to the lowerleftcorner and click, I can go up some distance and click again and whatever was there (I suspect from the menu) opens some sort of fancy window, with the name of the application at the top: the rest of the window stays black, as does the rest of the screen. ALT-F4 closes the window.
there are no errors on the DVD
that's all I've found out sofar.
(never had this problem with Mint (11LXDE-Live)).
can anyone tell me what's going on?
better still: how can this be solved??
IF NOBODY (OVER 60 READS SOFAR) CAN HELP, I'LL HAVE TO ABANDON MINT12KDE (MY DISTRO OF CHOICE)!
thx in advance

Re: HELP: M12_KDE64Live: black screen with only mousepointer
If you press the Ctrl-Alt-F1 key do you go to a console? Did you try to boot with the "Compatibility mode"?
Re: HELP: M12_KDE64Live: black screen with only mousepointer
will try this the next time I have to reboot my current Live-distro PCLOS_LXDE (to give M12_KDE a new chance)nunol wrote:If you press the Ctrl-Alt-F1 key do you go to a console? Did you try to boot with the "Compatibility mode"?
Re: HELP: M12_KDE64Live: black screen with only mousepointer
Compatibility mode doesn't go beyond 'checking battery status'.nunol wrote:If you press the Ctrl-Alt-F1 key do you go to a console? Did you try to boot with the "Compatibility mode"?
Ctrl-Alt-Backspace brings back the same balck screen a couple of times, then it opens a window for the KDE-crashhandler.
will check Ctrl-Alt-F1 next time.
if I go to a console, what should I do/try??

You can try this it worked for me
When grub shows click Tab
At the bottom you will see quiet splash--
remove the --
And put in nomodeset
Click enter
that allowed me to get in and set resolution an it worked there after

I'm sort of a newbie, so I need a bit more help.davy51 wrote:You can try this it worked for me

after clicking 'Tab', do I enter an editor of sorts?
'nomodeset' on a new line?
also, when booting into the Live-version does it use grub?
as far as the startup went and judging by the look of the mousepointer etc. the resolution seemed to be OK (1280x1024).

the first time it booted OK, but screenmax was 1024x768
then I tried with screen=1280x1024 iso nomodeset: this gave me the old problem
then back to the nomodeset, which now brought up 800x800 (screenmax)
so, is there a way in the Live-session to change to 1280x1024??
Re: HELP: M12_KDE64Live: black screen with only mousepointer
After you get into live mode you can change screen resolution until you get it installed
nomodeste will give you 1024/768 just to get you into live mode
After you get to live mode go to main menu--system--preferences--monitors and reset the resolution
It will last until you reboot
I dont know of any other settings that work

Re: HELP: M12_KDE64Live: black screen with only mousepointer
as I mentioned before, screenmax now is 800x600 in the menu you refer to (first time it was 1024x768 indeed).davy51 wrote:After you get into live mode you can change screen resolution until you get it installed

looks like I'm going to have to give up on KDE, if I can't get to 1280x1024.
Re: HELP: M12_KDE64Live: black screen with only mousepointer
i run normally 1024x768 so dont know if your resolutions will work or not
maybe someone with more knowledge than me will jump in and help

Re: HELP: M12_KDE64Live: black screen with only mousepointer
I do indeed go to a console, but since I didn't know how to proceed from there, that was as far as I got (and Compatibility mode resulted in a hang after checking battery status).nunol wrote:If you press the Ctrl-Alt-F1 key do you go to a console? Did you try to boot with the "Compatibility mode"?
anybody??
Re: HELP: M12_KDE64Live: black screen with only mousepointer

Re: HELP: M12_KDE64Live: black screen with only mousepointer
If you stop at the battery maybe it's a acpi problem, try to boot with the options: nomodeset acpi=off
Sometimes works: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 2&p=540547

Re: HELP: M12_KDE64Live: black screen with only mousepointer
btw the batterycheck is OK-ed, so it is the next step that freezes even before it is printed.nunol wrote:If you stop at the battery maybe it's a acpi problem, try to boot with the options: nomodeset acpi=off

anyway, nomodeset defaults to 1024x768 and that's max screenresolution as well.
how can this be forced to 1280x1024 in a Live-session?
