Desktop settings - Backgrounds

Post by oliverjames » Fri Nov 08, 2019 10:57 am

A small but irksome thing, I recently upgraded from 19.1 to 19.2 XFCE and now find that the option to change the backgrounds from desktop setting has an issue (it worked fine in 19.1).

Whatever I try I cannot get the images to display in the gui window. If I select the backdrops directory from this application the images are all greyed out and inaccessible.

Looks like a permission problem.

Can anyone help please?

Probably not a permission problem because a user can generally "see" OS files, but can't change them.

Try

Code: Select all

ls -l /the/backgrounds/directory
Please edit your original post title to include [SOLVED] if/when it is solved!
Your data and OS are backed up....right?

Checking the files in /usr/share/xfce4/backdrops they're all links root:root 666 and their targets are root:root 644.

I don't have an answer, but your files should look like this:

Code: Select all

hob@surf:~$ ls -lh /usr/share/xfce4/backdrops/
total 1.4M
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root   51 Jul 23 03:27 edesigner_linuxmint.png -> ../../backgrounds/linuxmint/edesigner_linuxmint.png
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root   46 Jul 23 03:27 ktee_linuxmint.png -> ../../backgrounds/linuxmint/ktee_linuxmint.png
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root   41 Jul 23 03:27 linuxmint.jpg -> ../../backgrounds/linuxmint/linuxmint.jpg
I use a wallpaper that I saved into my home Pictures directory. Maybe that would work for you.
