Moving xfce user folders to another location

Post by 4human » Sat Nov 09, 2019 5:15 am

Hi everyone!

So, as far as one can use a Google search and find something like
https://www.linuxquestions.org/question ... 175438596/
According to above mentioned user can change or add directories in
~/.config/user-dirs.dirs
But the point is that any settings restored to defaults and have no impact. Linux Mint Debian Edition 64-bit XFCE.

You need to run these after changing the locations:

Code: Select all

xdg-user-dirs-update
xdg-user-dirs-gtk-update
The first one can also be used to directly change a path instead of editing the file, e.g.

Code: Select all

xdg-user-dirs-update --set DESKTOP /path

Code: Select all

xdg-user-dirs-update
xdg-user-dirs-gtk-update
That gives me nothing at all. Thunar uses old location Unless I use --force flag

Code: Select all

xdg-user-dirs-update --force
Moving DOWNLOAD directory from /mnt/Storage/Downloads to Downloads
and changes I have made go back to default. So I changed /etc/xdg/user-dirs.defaults too. Now

Code: Select all

xdg-user-dirs-update --force
xdg-user-dirs-gtk-update --force
makes no changes with ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs. But file manager uses shortcut for old location ~/Downloads. The only thing I forgot is to drag new Shortcut on the Thunar Side Pane :)

Maybe that's an Xfce-specific issue, I unfortunately do not have the desktop at hand to try. Did you restart Thunar after a change? Maybe for good measure:

Code: Select all

killall thunar
