[SOLVED] 640x480 screen resolution after liquorix kernel installation

Post by alro7779 »

Hey, guys!
I had to reinstall my LM Xfce 20.2 after applying a Liquorix kernel update, since my screen resolution turned on to 640x480. Everything was good after de installation; I went to Driver Manager and I installed the nvidia-driver-470 (recommended) like I used to do all the time since my GPU is the Nvidia Geforce GTX 1050. After a system reboot, now I got the same low display resolution back. OK, I said, I'm gonna install the liquorix kernel and see what happens... the same crap!!! Now I'm stuck with this low display resolution. Any hardware/system information you need please let me know.
Thanks in advance!

Re: 640x480 screen resolution after liquorix kernel installation

I have a similar issue with LM Mate 20.2 and nvidia GTX 1070. With nvidia-470 driver on boot (grub) the resolution is 1024x768 and remain the same on login screen and the on current desktop. I have to logout and login again to obtain the normal 1920x1080 resolution. This is not happened with nouveau driver active: during the boot sequence the resolution change from 1024x768 to 1920 x1080 and remain the same on login screen and than on desktop. Any ideas?

The second post is not related to Liquorix, only to nvidia-470 issue about resolution. The kernel on my LM 20.2 is 5.4.0-80

I think your problem is similar to the one in this thread [SOLVED] NVIDIA driver failing sometimes on boot ("no hardware acceleration"). Let us know if the fix roblm recommends in the second post addresses the issue for you.

While you would not see the "no hardware acceleration" message because neither Xfce nor MATE checks for hardware acceleration like Cinnamon does, the fact the resolution is not correct is another symptom of that same issue.

If that fix does not correct the problem, please give us information about your install by entering this command in a terminal: inxi -Fxxxrz
Click </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply and then place your cursor between the code markers and paste the results of the command between the code markers [code]Results[/code]. This will let us know how Mint sees your hardware.

Thank you, very much! It worked!

Tell me... why that issue happens? Can I use timeshift to create a system image and save it on to another partition?

Thank you SMG! It worked (in LM 20.2 the files are: /etc/modules-load.d/@modules.conf ). On the other hand, before that (around 10 minutes earlier) I installed kernel 5.11 from mint repos and there was no more issue. Now I am using LTS kernel (5.4) with that modification.
All the best!

Please go to your first post in this thread, click the pencil icon, and add [SOLVED] to the title so others know you are no longer seeking help on this issue.

Yes, you can create a Timeshift snapshot and save it to another EXT4 partition.

The graphic driver files build during the boot process and sometimes they are not ready when X Server (which runs the graphics) starts. The change you made gets the driver files in line to load sooner so they are ready when X Server starts.

I'm not sure a 1st-gen Ryzen really needs the 5.14 kernel, but you can use it as long as it works for you. We do not recommend using Liquorix kernels in Mint, but I understand why some people use them as they can help when doing certain software tasks.

It has to be EXT4 partition only? If so, I'll have to format the NTFS partition in order to create the snapshot. Thanks!

Thanks for that info, man!

I've read that Liquorix kernel is the best for gaming, but I don't know if that is true. What do you think?

Your system is installed on EXT4. You can not save snapshots to NTFS partitions.

One should take into consideration the operating system, the hardware, and what tasks you want to do. Newer is not always better on older hardware (5th-gen Ryzens are available so while 1st-gen is not ancient, it is "older").

The currently supported Mint kernels (supported by Ubuntu) are the 5.4 LTS kernel, the 5.11 kernel (and two OEM kernels for certain Ubuntu-certified computers). Liquorix is not a supported kernel, so you may cause problems with your Mint install if you use it.

Thanks for that information! What kernel do you recommend to use instead?

I did format a 200 GB NTFS partition on to EXT4, and while I was prompted for creating the snapshot using Timeshift, it was asked adding or not /root and /home users... what should I choose? Is there a manual or some for Timeshift instructions on how to use?

I recommend you start with the 5.4 LTS (long-term-support) kernel. If you have issues with it, then you can upgrade to the 5.11 kernel in Update Manager.

I personally just use the default settings. I save my person information separately. This older Timeshift tutorial may answer questions you have. If you have any additional questions, please open a new thread.

I think I'm gonna stay with Liquorix for now until some related problems begin.

Maybe it was prompted to me to include /root and /home users since I didn't create a /home partition this time; I'm gonna try to separate it later on. Thanks!!!
By the way, I've created a snapshot on Timeshift with no /root and /home users included (by default), and it took me 12 GB of space only.
