Is there any particular reason why some apps dont match up to the main gnome version, eg. Exaile instead of Rhythmbox. Just wondered if there was any technical reason for the switch or whether you are just picking your personal favourites rather than the "defaults"

Unless there are some compelling technical reasons for changing things wouldn't it be far better to include the same software across the different versions? It means more of a unified identity for all the different Mints plus it makes documentation a lot easier.

Most of the software has been in XFCE CE since the beginning.
I really don't have favorite apps, besides Firefox and now Inkscape.
I only used the ones that will work well and isn't to heavy.
Also has to fit on the live cd.

Any reason to switch any of these?
Never used Rhythmbox really and looked more complicated than it has to be.

All suggestions welcome.

If you have no real preference for one app over another one I would just stick to what ships in the main distro (Unless Rhythmbox somehow takes up loads more resources or something).

After all, if Clem thought Exaile was better/less complicated than Rhythmbox he would have used that in the gnome version.

I think I might switch to Banshee once the new version is out of beta, so I'm not a Rhythmbox fanboy or anything. I just think where possible all the versions of Mint should share similarities, and from the sounds of things theres no compelling reason for having a different audio player.

There was a poll for Rhythmbox.
Once I have all the settings fixed for XFCE CE I will install to my hard drive.
Then test what uses more RAM.

When I started the goal was to make it lighter then the main and still have all the functions the main has as I can.
These won't be the same apps but ones that can get the job done without freezing up older PCs.

Now sometimes Xubuntu weighs in and removes a possibility, by not supporting it anymore.(like xubuntu system tools.)]

Also No Pulse audio for XFCE.(xubuntu doesn't have it installed and doesn't work when installed)

Exaile was the first thing I installed in Elyssa...
So please try yo keep it in, it's more versatile then Rhythmbox IMO.

Sorry but you cant just ask for what apps you like to be included, this distro is not just to meet your needs. :P

If the main version of Mint had Exaile I would not be kicking up a fuss, I'm not arguing for a certain app because I prefer it (unlike others ;)) I am simply trying to get some uniformity between the different versions of Mint. As it stands every version of Mint is going to have a different music player and that seems counter intuitive to me when there is no reason why XFCE cant use Rhythmbox.

Well it's going to be that way anyway.
Fluxbox will probably use something different then then both Main and XFCE.
Kde uses apps that are QT not GTK.(amarok)
The mini version(not sure it has a name yet) is using something else.(not sure since I haven't watch it as much)

It will never be all the same apps installed by default across these Editions since they are aimed at different people and PCs.
I understand what you are saying but know it's not going to happen.

I have some info on Exaile on a web page Bookmarked in XFCE CE.(has been there for awhile)

Also this is a Community Edition so the community(inculding me) has a say what goes into it.
Exploder and Clem then test to make sure it's up to the quality they think it should be at.
They also give ideas on what they think needs to be changed or added.

One suggestion is to include Tilda - I first stumbled across it in SAM Linux, it's a drop down terminal that is set to autostart at startup, I installed it in Elyssa (Main) and it works great, it's in the repos.

Code: Select all

apt install tilda
I've set it up so that pressing F10 makes it drop down - fast, slick and cool! 8) 8) 8)

I have been working on a true type font install script for a thunar custom action.(Should be done today)(can use translations)
I have tried tilda not sure why new users would use it.
I may have it installed on the live cd depending on space left after the essentials.

Also worked on.
Fixed Translations for mintConfig-xfce and mintConfig-fluxbox translations page: http://www.linuxmint.com/forum/viewtopi ... 43&t=13032
Fixed code in mintDesktop-xfce
redone mintDesktop-fluxbox
added Open folder as root as custom action in thunar.
added create link to as a custom action in thunar.

Have to fix mintConfig-xfce for Elyssa appilcations.
Set up a place for the other translations.

mintConfig-fluxbox with Translations of App and App names working:

Just wondering if Lightning is going to be put in for release vs Sunbird for the calendar. I know this was discussed some in another thread, and I was wondering if it had some weight or not.

For those who do not know what Lightning is, it is a calendar add on for Thunderbird email client vs having a separate calendar program like Sunbird.

Cant wait for the release!!

great choice of apps. just one comment:

don't you plan to include firefox 3.0 (final) instead of rc1?

Another thought...
How about tossing in: Osmo - a great personal organizer, which includes calendar, tasks manager and address book, it's a quite handy!

Depends on when Ubuntu makes a package for it.
