Add a HOT Key to lauch Whisker Menu in XFCE

Post by GeneC »

Add a HOT KEY to launch WhiskerMenu
WHISKER MENU UPDATE BRINGS SUPPORT FOR OPENING THE MENU USING A KEYBOARD SHORTCUT, OTHER ENHANCEMENTS [XFCE]
Whisker Menu is an alternative to the Xfce application menu that features a search function so you can easily find the application you want to launch. The menu also supports browsing apps by category, you can add applications to favorites and more. The menu is used by default in Linux Mint 15 Xfce.

The application was updated recently, getting a much requested feature: you can now open the menu using a keyboard shortcut (though you must add the keyboard shortcut manually - see below), along with other enhancements and fixes.

Go to =

XFCE Settings Manager > keyboard > application shortcuts > add >

Code: Select all

 xfce4-popup-whiskermenu
Select hot key of your choice... (Supr_L "Windows Key", in my case).

I did as directed but command from CLI is xfce4-popup-whiskermenu so the keyboard shortcut doesn't work.
Any ideas?

Umm. Works for me. I installed the quantal whiskermenu from the dev site onto Maya-LTS-Xfce.
You have to use the GUI. Open the Settings page as follows:

Settings > Keyboard > Application Shortcuts > Add:
Paste or type

Code: Select all

xfce4-popup-whiskermenu
then click OK.
Then it asks that you enter a key or a key combination to use.
I chose <Super>w which is actually hold the Windows key and press w.

Now when I press Super+w the whiskermenu opens.

@herbie643,
It's not really a command, but a keystroke combination that performs an action.
For example: Alt-F3 brings up the Application Finder.
I created Super-w that brings up the WhiskerMenu.

Please explain what you did.
What you entered and what was the result.

I followed this link's instructions
http://www.webupd8.org/2013/07/whisker-menu-update-brings-support-for.html

Failed to launch Shortcut Super_L
Failed to execute child process "xfce4-popup-whiskermenu" (No such file or directory)

In the list of Keyboard Shortcuts this is the display

Command Shortcut
-----------------------------------------------------
xfce4-popup-whiskermenu Super_L
