Remove broken indicator from XFCE indicator panel?

Post by justanothermintuser »

There is an icon showing up in the XFCE indicator panel that I want to remove. I have been experimenting with different remote desktop apps and I think one of them has left an indicator plugin installed. The icon looks like a monitor screen with a red cross through it.

I am on a 64-bit computer with Linux Mint XFCE 17.3 installed.

The xfce4-indicator-plugin.log has the following entries on start up:
DEBUG libindicator-plugin Looking at Module: libapplication.so
DEBUG libindicator-plugin Loading Module: libapplication.so
DEBUG libindicator-plugin Load indicator: libapplication.so
DEBUG libindicator-plugin Looking at Service: com.canonical.indicator.sound
DEBUG libindicator-plugin Loading Service: com.canonical.indicator.sound
DEBUG libindicator-plugin Load indicator: com.canonical.indicator.sound
DEBUG Indicator-Application Connected to Application Indicator Service.
DEBUG Indicator-Application Request current apps
DEBUG Indicator-Application Building new application entry: :1.47 with icon: blueman-tray at position 0
DEBUG libindicator-plugin Entry added for io=libapplication.so
DEBUG Indicator-Application Building new application entry: org.kde.StatusNotifierItem-2145-1 with icon: at position 1
DEBUG libindicator-plugin Entry added for io=libapplication.so
DEBUG Indicator-Application Building new application entry: :1.31 with icon: nm-device-wired at position 2
DEBUG libindicator-plugin Entry added for io=libapplication.so
WARNING LIBDBUSMENU-GLIB Getting layout failed: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.UnknownObject: No such object path '/MenuBar'
DEBUG libindicator-plugin Entry added for io=com.canonical.indicator.sound

Left-clicking the icon only shows a sliver of menu with no menu items visible and causes the following line to be added to the log:
CRITICAL LIBDBUSMENU-GLIB dbusmenu_menuitem_send_about_to_show: assertion 'DBUSMENU_IS_MENUITEM(mi)' failed

The Indicators properties dialog only has two entries "Application Indicators" and "Sound Menu".

I would like to remove the "org.kde.StatusNotifierItem-2145-1" plug-in. It is the only thing in the log that looks like it does not belong.

Me too. Same setup, same result. A small black "monitor" with a red stop sign in the indicator menu, same entries in log file as well.

There was another post here but its gone (probably due to the forum restore) with other users having the same issue. I also have it and I have not played with remote desktop apps outside of remmina which I've been using for a while without issue. I've attached a picture of the notification area. The problem is the unknown icon on the left.

My log is also similar to the above log except mine states StatusNotifierItem-2411-1

This started with updates last week (prior to the weekend issue). Unfortunately, I didn't reboot right away so not sure which update(s) started the issue, but here is what updated in the week prior.

Upgraded the following packages:

+1 for me too ... exactly the same and seems to be something that got updated the last couple of days i'd say, however I've not been logging out and restarting xfce so not sure exactly when.

I've tried removing and (re)installing xfce4-indicator-plugin package with reboots either side and can't seem to shift it.

I've created a second panel and that's affected to.

does anyone with this issue run dropbox?

after some tinkering around, I've noticed my black-screen-with-red-stop-sign icon disappears if i issue 'dropbox stop' from a command prompt and then 'dropbox start' gives me back my dropbox icon ...

... which is the reason I started looking for issues with dropbox icons not being displayed as mine is not working.

seems to be a load of posts about this so give that a go?

I had forgotten I had dropbox. Stopped it and restarted it with sudo and the icon cleared up. So that's the issue here. Good call.

I'm running 3.14.7 now which was just released on 2/18.

Adding this here. It's not just Mint XFCE.

I run dropbox on my system, and I'm pretty sure my broken icon is supposed to be the indicator. I've tried removing and restoring the indicator plugin, starting and restarting dropbox, and neither of those things worked. I don't remember exactly when it happened, but it's been like that for a while now. Logging out and logging back in doesn't help, either. I've also got Cinnamon desktop installed, which had it's own problems, but I got around that by just setting dropbox to start later (the daemon was starting fine, but the icon must've been delayed or something).

This problem does seem to refer to the dropbox icon. I have just figured a permanent workaround.
create an empty file in your home folder called dropbox.sh
paste in the following:

Code: Select all

#!/bin/bash

dropbox stop
sleep 5s && dbus-launch dropbox start &

exit
Then save file.

Make the file executable by entering your home folder, (or the folder you created the file in) opening a terminal there & run the command:

Code: Select all

chmod +x dropbox.sh
Then in "session & startup" "application autostart" delete the original dropbox entry, & add a new entry, in the command box point it to the file you have just created. Log out & back in & all should be well.

ps. Don't forget to untick "start dropbox on system startup" in the dropbox icon preferences, as you are now using a custom command.

Afraid I can't take all the credit. A lot of Googling, pointed me in the right direction.
Anyway glad it worked for you.

Some great fixes in this thread, - as a heads-up, you can disable Dropbox from auto-starting within the status bar icon, and then delete it from the session autostart list, after which you can create your own start-up using ;

/bin/bash -c "sleep 15 && dropbox stop && env DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS="" dropbox start -i"

This is what worked for me consistently.

Since updating to mint 18 I've noticed a lot of indicator icons are oversized or otherwise buggy or just not working. The solution I found was to remove the package sni-qt which forced all the indicator icons to appear in the notification area instead, where they all seem to work much better.

It's not an ideal solution, I would much prefer leaving that package in place and choosing to override the default settings on a per-app basis, but it works well for all the notifications I have and nothing seems to be broken.

Maybe part of the issue was that sni-qt uses Qt, while the Xfce panels use Gtk?

Makes sense, especially since dropbox has only had those icon problems since it moved to qt. But I have no idea how to work around the problem without deleting that package.

IDK either. Several years ago, I installed a game that used Qt (IIRC, it was one of the versions of Nethack that was graphical instead of using letters/symbols). This was in... I believe it was the GNOME 2.x DE, but it might have been Xfce. Regardless, a DE that used Gtk instead of Qt. Several things about that game's window looked... odd, and slightly unpleasant (IMHO). The only solutions that occurred to me were to live with it or to uninstall the application. I did the former for a while, but then I did the latter and installed SDL Slash'Em, lol.

Good luck with your issue!
