There's new icon showing up in my panel, black filled square, with a red circle in the middle and a slash thru it. but clicking it doesn't seem to revel any info. what is this?

Left click the panel -> panel -> panel preferences and go to the items tab. Any clue there?
Also when you right-click the icon, does anything shows up?

I currently use Cinnamon, although I have used xfce in the past. I sometimes get a symbol like this when the automatic refreshes in the Update Manager fail to make a connection with the nominated server. Try opening Update Manager, click 'Refresh' and see what happens.
