LM 18 Xfce - Filezilla no longer launching

Filezilla was working fine up until this afternoon I've been running LM 18 for a couple of days). Having used it earlier, I went to launch it again and realized I had not added it to Favorites after installing LM 18, so immediately did so. When I went to launch it, nothing (visible) happened, not even a busy cursor. This is true of both the entry in Favorites and the original in Internet.

Thinking there may be some odd ball issue, I rebooted, but that didn't help.

Any help would be appreciated. I will try using the Software Center to uninstall and then re-install it. I do website work (mainly server-side) and a good FTP program (with Secure FTP) is essential.

Just out of curiosity, did you perform a fresh installation of Mint 18 or do an upgrade? (It shouldn't matter; as I stated, I am just curious.)

When you try starting it from a terminal window, do you see errors like the ones in this thread?

If so, try the solution mentioned for a temporary(+/-) solution.

BtW, are you running the version in the repos or are you running the latest version? If the former and you wish to see if the latest version works, you can follow the directions in this thread.

I have always partitioned my disk drive so /home is a separate partition. That means I can always do a clean install by using the option to select partitions during the install. I also have / formatted so there's no junk left by "installing over the top of the previous release".

I'm using the version of Filezilla from repositories.
When I run it from the command line, I get the following (I included the line with the command and the following prompt):

That appears to be basically the same problem as that in the link you pointed me at.

Trashing the .filezilla directory is not an option for me. I have an extensive set of servers that I get at with FTP. Not surprisingly, they all have different directory structures, login names and passwords which are set in Filezilla (so I don't have to keep looking stuff up in my password vault — I have a strange memory and cannot remember those things).

I worked around my immediate need by logging into an account on the hosting provider and using the file manager available via their hosting control panel. That's awkward and will not work for all sites I'm involved with.

[Added] Instead of trashing .filezilla, I renamed the filezilla.xml file. Then filezilla started. After quitting, I compared the old fileilla.xml with the new one created by launching filezilla. They were quite different, not just because it saves information about the last time it was run, but also the new one did not have my custom file associations (such as using gedit for viewing and editing).

I launched it a second time and again it appeared to start. When I tried to connect to a site, it crashed. I tried that again, this time launching from the command line and the crash appears to produce the following additional messages:

This is looking more like it is not Filezilla that has a defect, but a change in some library it depends upon.

As a lot of people use Filezilla, the troubleshooting you are doing will likely be of use to others - and to the developer (possibly helping him/her come up with an actual long-term solution?) if you can get the information to him/her.

Then open filezilla.xml using a text editor.
Remove the Last local directory tag.
Save the file again and reopen filezilla.
