When I try to open an executable script from file-explorer, it tries to open it with xterm, which I don't have installed. Is there a way to teach it to use the xfce-terminal?
Interestingly, the "open in terminal" option (which just opens a terminal with the given working directory) works just fine.

I'm sure there is a way to do this. Until them, the easiest solution is to install xterm. Open Synaptic Package Manager or Software Manager and hunt + install xterm.

Menu > Settings > Preferred Applications - Utilities tab . . is it set to "Xfce Terminal" ?
You can try to reset it by choosing Other > click the Browse icon on the right, it will open to /usr/bin/ , and then choose xfce4-terminal.
