[SOLVED] 18.3 Login screen resolution 'changing' main screen resolution...

Post by mingle » Mon Dec 18, 2017 3:32 am

Hi Guys,

I've looked around the forum and while there have been similar threads, I've found no solution and it's driving me nucking futs!

I'm now running LM 18.3 xfce 64-bit - this WASN'T an issue on LM18.2

The native resolution of my display is 1920 x 1200, which is what the 'Display' is set to within the Linux desktop session.

What's happening is that the login-screen resolution (1024 x 768) is affecting the main screen resolution when the user is logged on.

In other words the main screen size is also set to 1024 x 768 when the user has logged on. I have to go into Setting > Display to set the screen size back to the native resolution of 1920 x 1200.

When I log off and log on again (as the same, or another user) the main screen reverts to 1024 x 768.

In 18.3 the 'Login Window' setting utility seems to have changed - is the the cause of the problem?

Can someone suggest how I can fix this, or whether it's a known bug?

Cheers,

Mike.

That's another problem I've had with Mint Xfce with LightDM, you could try replacing it with MDM:

sudo apt install mdm xscreensaver

sudo apt remove slick-greeter lightdm lightdm-settings apparmor

Thanks for the reply... So it's LightMDM that's the issues - I've heard of issues with this. I'm glad I'm not the only one!

I tried:

sudo apt install mdm xscreensaver

... but get an error - any suggestions:

This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or

I don't have the same issue, but I'm not a fan of LightDM because of a different issue I had with (18.2).

In 18.2 Xfce, I had the the Light Locker Settings turned "off" in all of my 4 computers. Sometimes; not all of the time, but sometimes after my 4 computers had gone to sleep, when I woke them up at different times, I was presented with a "guest login screen" and this should not have happened. So far, it hasn't happened with 18.3 Xfce and I hope it doesn't happen.

The other issue I have the (I guess) LightDM is that there don't seem to be any login window 'themes' as there were with MDM...

It's really just visual 'fluff', but the extra options and login window layouts were quite nice.

I discovered that the issue wasn't with LM, but rather with VirtualBox (my LM 18.3 install was a virtual machine).

The latest update to VB (5.2.4) fixed the issue.

Cheers,

Mike.
