[SOLVED] Notifications broke.

Post by linmin »

Hi.
Would you please advice me how to fix such problem:

Some time ago there was similar problem, but after next update it was fixed. No xfce4-notifyd reinstalling, nor installing new or previous versions did have effect. May be the decision is obvious but I do not see it. Thank you in advance for help.

Unfortunately, it is the same.

As you can see, the notifications can be placed in any corner of the Desktop, but in my case only in top right corner, no matter what position I choose "Top, bottom or left". Next, the appearance of the notification window: as you can see they are all different, botn in my case - simple green thin window and, of course, no matter do I change the theme or not - it is the same. The problem is in this behavior of the Notifications: no customizing, no changable position.

i am confused are these your screenshots from your computer? post a screenshot of the current issue on your display what do you have checked in settings>session and startup>application autostart?

do you have notify-osd installed? search synaptic for this and try to uninstall but beware of any other dependencies that will be removed
what is your output in terminal for ps -ef | grep notif

ps -ef | grep notif
Before

Code: Select all

lmmin@lmm ~ $ ps -ef | grep notif
root 36 2 0 06:43 ? 00:00:00 [fsnotify_mark]
lmmin 27035 27020 0 20:17 pts/0 00:00:00 grep --color=auto notif
After installation

Code: Select all

lmmin@lmm ~ $ ps -ef | grep notif
root 36 2 0 20:25 ? 00:00:00 [fsnotify_mark]
lmmin 3046 3030 0 20:55 pts/1 00:00:00 grep --color=auto notif
notify-osd
It was not installed but I did install it, logout, reboot... Nothing changed.
Once I found similar problem but with sound (the same problem with notification). User said the cause was in chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra packet (besides chromium was not installed in system at all). I couldn't check its deleting because it removes chromium-browser too. Well, I suppose there are two causes: or chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra packet, or firefox 57 (after upgrading from LM 18.2 to 18.3). Truly, I uninstall v.57 and changed to 52.2.5 ESR. Well, perhaps I should make backup browsers' settings and profiles and uninstall them one by one and see the results.

Well, the problem was solved. The xfce4-notifyd packet was installed, but, unfortunately, I do not know how on earth, the notification-daemon packet was uninstalled or deleted... I installed it again and reboot PC. Now everything works as it should be.

Let me thank you very much for spending your time for solving the problem. I hope the case will help sombody in the future too.
