More than half my programs will not launch

Post by dneloso » Thu Apr 12, 2018 10:46 am

All of a sudden a lot of the original programs that came with mint
Will not launch. From menu or terminal. Click on program icon in menu
menu closes and nothing happens. Right click on menu item and in
Properties item is greyed out. Seems the programs that will not launch
Are ones that access the network. In terminal when trying to launch
A program when you hit enter it goes back to the prompt with no error
Message not no program launches. I have tried every thing I can find
or think of and nothing helps. Ivan connect to the internet but cannot
launch any program to use it. I am here on a cheap China tablet.
Thank you for any help you can give me. David Nelson

This started when I got a popup saying that a plugin tried to start to many times and would
Be removed. I stupidly said OK thinking it should be easy to replace. Bad mistake as it never
told me what it removed. I have spent the last week trying to get back. Looking on google and
forums. It seems like any program that has access to the internet will not launch. I would put
the results of inxi in a code box but I do not know how.

An android tablet either. Any way HP desktop with mint 18.3 xfce desktop. Thànks David

Try administrollaattori's solution - your symptoms sound similar to what other xfce users reported at the time the broken virtualbox-guest* updates dropped.

E.g. - viewtopic.php?f=57&t=266442, viewtopic.php?f=47&t=266710
