LM19.1 XFCE suddenly won't log on [INSTALLED 19.2]

Post by Frankus333 » Tue Aug 06, 2019 7:28 am

G'day folks
I have a HP15 laptop triple booted with LM19.1 XFCE, LM18.3 KDE and Win 8.1. The XFCE system boots normally to the login screen, with initial LM desktop image, then my picture desktop image. For no apparent reason, when I now attempt login, the screen goes completely black for a second or two, then returns to the same login screen.

This occurs for all three kernels, normal boot or in recovery mode. Running the Clean, fsck Check file systems, and dpkg Repair broken packages options hasn't improved anything.

I can log on via terminal, and have been able to run updates this way using "apt-get update" and "apt-get dist-upgrade", but nothing has improved. I don't know how to check any logs via the terminal for a clue.

I had recently installed a couple of KDE apps (Okular, Simple Scan), but they worked fine initially, so don't seem to be the problem.

Does this sound like something that might be fixable relatively easily, or should I just reinstall? The latter option would be quick and easy, but doesn't help me understand what went wrong or how to prevent it happening again.

Cheers

G'day again folks

I can get a new desktop after logging in via terminal with command "sudo startx". It has my background wallpaper picture, but has a menu bar at the top of the screen, not the bottom as usual, and showing me as root, not me. It also has a small launcher bar at the bottom in the middle. However, this desktop/root user won't allow programs such as Thunderbird, Firefox or Chromium to start (although Simple Scan starts OK). The File Manager opens, but has a warning about using the root account and I could damage my system.

Just wondered if this was useful info. I won't play around too much in case I do cause damage.

(The command "startx" tried first did not produce a desktop, but eventually showed a timeout message EDIT: about locking the authority file.)

G'day again folks

I resolved a similar problem with a corrupted user account in the past by creating a new admin user and then deleting the corrupted user account. However, I tried to do the same here via logging on as root as above, but when I try to start the Users and Groups app, the window comes up, but is greyed, and never becomes fully accessible.

Is there another way I can create a new admin user?

Cheers

G'day folks

Looks like no takers for this one? No learnings here :(

I have installed LM XFCE 19.2 on this partition instead, and will see how that goes. I will continue to experiment with integrating some KDE apps, and hope that wasn't the cause of the problem.

Cheers
