XFCE Panel Large Icons?

Post by r-miller96 »

I like the XFCE desktop but there's one thing I don't like about it, it has that old style windows switcher on the panel (small icon with title). Is there a way to change it to the more modern look (large icons only that are highlighted when active)?

I know 19 cinnamon has it and in cinnamon 18.3 you can add an applet "Icing Task Manager". With the highly customizability of Linux I'm sure there's something out there that I'm not finding.

I'm currently using 18.3 cinnamon on my main machine (see signature), 18.3 XFCE on a Toshiba Satelite As205-S4777 Model PSAF3U-03600V.

I've been playing around with 19.2 in a VM and I'm considering switching over to 19.2 XFCE on the main machine. I might just wait for the 19.3 release.

Right click on the Workspace Switcher and select properties.
Click the Show miniature view.

If you would like a smaller view select the number of rows: 2

Sorry I used the wrong term I mean the Window Button or Windows Menu

In this ScreenShot I have highlighted in Yellow (Virtual Machine XFCE) what I would like to change to what's highlighted in Red (Host Machine Cinnamon).

In panel preferences you can change the row size which will make the icons smaller or larger.

The red is similar to a dock like Docky. You can install Docky, and maybe other docks, in Xfce.

I'm sorry yet again. Something I meant to mention that I failed to. Was I would like to be able to pin shortcuts to the panel.

Haveamint is correct concerning changing the row size. Depending on how much you change the row size, you may have to adjust the system default font. Otherwise, the text might be considerablly smaller than the icons.

I would not install docky. If you need a dock you can always create a second panel and configure it to behave like a dock. I actually have a second panel dock on my XFCE laptop.

If you have better eyes than mine you might understand the zcot reply. I think he is trying to tell you to remove the text from the buttons.

Panel Preference->Items->Window Buttons->wrench button on the right side
Appearance and unclick Show button labels

That's looks really nice. If I ever get out of my XP-like way of doing things, I might go for that. :D

I appreciate all the replies but these aren't quite what I'm looking for.

Best way to describe it would be like the Windows 7 taskbar.

You want to switch on Window Grouping.

Menu > Settings > Panel > Items > Window Buttons > Edit item

Uncheck show button labels, set Grouping to always.

Screenshot below is from 18.3 - but it's the same in XFCE in 19.x as well.

However I don't think XFCE supports having the Windows buttons as launchers / pinned apps as-well. For that you need Cinnamon.

When I change these settings I can't pin a program to the panel. I found something called dockbarx but I couldn't get it to work and it was from an old ppa.

+1, I do this in both Xfce and KDE. SImpler, much faster.

In general I'd beware trying to make something like Xfce or LXDE be like Cinnamon. It's possible but then it's not a light, fast DE anymore, which is kind of the point of wanting them in the first place. Personally I like the idea of something that looks like it's from tthe 90s (which Xfce kind of is really) but works much like a Mac.

I'm not looking for a dock. What I'm looking to do is kind of already there "the launcher" does part of it (pins a large icon to the panel) and (configuring the window button to be Icons only) like zcot and smurphos mentioned above do the other part. It would be nice if there was a simple combination of the 2 which I don't think would be resource heavy at all.

I found a list of emails for the XFCE development team, I'm considering sending them an email. Wouldn't hurt, right?

Nothing wrong with a feature request but just don't hold your breath - XFCE's pace of development is glacially slow.

Her's a nice article from 5 years ago bemoaning the lack of this feature and looking at various dock applications an an alternative.

Thank you, I did some searching and discovered rimg button will produce a smaller image and when you click it will display the original image. The following Linux Mint thread is a good resource for learning more about how to post images.

Interesting I know that most if not everyone on a development team for a Linux project does so on they're own time. I understand that. You would think by now that they would've gotten around to it. But what can we do other that learn to write code and do it ourselves. That's something I don't think I would like to learn at least not now.

Lol, I forgot about how Windows did that. I have not used Windows in so long I am forgetting it. I think that might be a good thing.

I cannot even believe that I replied concerning desktop frills, because it is the last thing I think about.
