Alt-Tab to switch windows changed somehow [SOLVED]

Post by M_Mynaardt »

Hi there!

Somewhere along the line I must have somehow changed the behaviour of how Alt-Tab switches between windows.

It was, as usual, showing a window with a graphic of each window to cycle through. It doesn't do that now.

I tried looking through all the Window settings to see if I could get it back to showing those window graphics when cycling through Alt-Tab, but no such luck.

I'm sure there's something there in the settings somewhere. But I can't figure it out. :(

Can anyone out there tell me how to get Xfce (or Compiz, or whatever it is), back to showing the selection of graphics of open windows when using Alt-Tab.

Thank you ever so much in advance!

Can we assume Alt+Tab does nothing now?
Start 'Keyboard' and go here:

Re: Alt-Tab window cycling not using the default GUI (Xfce)

Well, alt-tab does do something. It still cycles through the open windows.

But what id does NOT do is a GUI display of open windows to cycle through as you keep hitting Alt-Tab or one of the arrow keys. So, I can still cycle through open windows, but it does not use the nice GUI thingy for I was used to.

As I said, all I can think of is I inadvertently messed up an Xfce (or other) setting by accident. And I just can't figure out how to set it back to that GUI default I'm used to...

Where you looking at a MATE or Cinnamon desktop? This is the 'Keyboard ' Screen I get:

Go into System Settings, select Windows then select the Alt-Tab tab.

My apologies. I only just noticed that this an cfce question.

Have you looked at the options on the "Cycling" tab of "Window Manager Tweaks" (found under Settings in the main menu)?

Edit: may not apply if you're using Compiz - in which case perhaps turn off Compiz...

Aha! It's working again now!
It took a bit of bumbling about, but you gave me the nudge in the right direction.

Took me a while to figure out how to turn Compiz off. I must've been daydreaming when I switched on and/or didn't know what I was doing. Excellent possibility of either ...

But anyway ... what did the trick, finally was:
Settings Manager -> Desktop Settings -> And select "Xfwm4" all by its lonesome without the composite thingy. I don't know if that's the default or not. But, once I did that, I got the icon choice for open windows that I was used to.

Thanks so much for that!
