[SOLVED] One CPU pegged to 100% at idle

Post by agz »

Hello.

I have freshly installed Linux Mint and after doing some customization one of my CPUs is pegged to 100% at all times. I've gone through a few of the topics here and none of them addressed my problem.

The only customizations I've done relative to XFCE is I added a few separators and gadgets to the taskbar. Subsequently I removed them yet my CPU usage remains high. I also tried to disable the compositor to no effect. My laptop is getting hot enough to cause concern so I am hoping I find a resolution to this.

Along with the above I also had tried to run

Code: Select all

xfconf-query -c xfwm4 -p /general/vblank_mode -t string -s "xpresent" --create
Which did not fix the problem. My configuration:

Code: Select all

System:
Host: laptop Kernel: 5.4.0-80-generic x86_64 bits: 64 Desktop: Xfce 4.16.0
  Distro: Linux Mint 20.2 Uma
Machine:

  resolution: 2560x1440~60Hz

Any ideas?

Welcome to the forum, agz.

I'm not sure why you did not supply the complete inxi output, but I believe the cpu on your computer is new enough that running an updated kernel may help.

Open Update Manager. Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue. Make sure 5.11 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear. Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.

If that does not help, please supply the entire output of inxi -Fxxxrz as requested in Section 5 of READ: How To Get Help!.

Updated to 5.11:
Linux laptop 5.11.0-25-generic #27~20.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jul 13 17:41:23 UTC 2021 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
CPU appears to still be pegged on boot.

Apologies for not reading the rules close enough. Here is the full output:

from running top it appears `kworker+` is doing the consumption? Second most consuming process is `ksoftir+`.

If you run a live session of Mint, is the cpu still being pegged? I wonder if something didn't remove completely when you removed what you added.

Here is some info on kworker [SOLVED] kworker CPU hogs. It is older info, but the general principle is that kworker is not the problem; something else is causing the issue. Seems checking dmesg or journalctl might help determine what is the issue.

ksoftir seems to be a similar situation in that it means other things are the real issue Why is ksoftirqd/0 process using all of my CPU?.

Also try creating a new user using Users and Groups in your menu.
Then log out and log back in as the new user.
New users get a fresh set of non-molested config files.
Check your cpu usage there--this will be telling
Everything in life was difficult before it became easy.

CPUs working "all steam".
Why?

Is there configuration in Setup? Example:
-Default CPU Speed
-Cpu Speed by Operating System

Integrated processor chart, there does not seem to be onboard video or separate video card.
High video resolution (2560x1440) but around half of the maximum processor capacity and common update frequency (60Hz).

Here, KWorker and Ksoftir processes do not consume CPU.
Kworker seems to be connected to APT's work as for Ksoftir, I did not find anything.

The command below can show the top 10 CPU consumers.
sudo inxi -tc10

Indeed. and you wont believe the fix.

I started tracking dmesg and checking and it appears that Linux Mint will peg the CPU polling a USB port shut down for over current. I decided to blow compressed air into the port and magically my CPU returned to normal. Bought some USB covers but it seems stable.

I feel like an idiot...lol

Good detective work!

If you consider the issue resolved, please go to your first post in this thread, click the pencil icon, and add [SOLVED] to the title so others know you are no longer seeking help on this issue. It also lets others know there is a solution in this thread. It's probably not one many would think of!

0.o. That was an odd situation. That laptop, worst case, is around 3.5 years old. Unless you constantly only used it in a severely dirt/dusty environment every day for years on end...I don't understand how that could have been the problem. But regardless, happy to read you solved it. :D

Indeed. It probably was just a lucky particle. The port itself was not visibly dirty so I was concerned the connection was broken. As you've pointed out it's unlikely given the relative newness of the laptop. Might've been a rogue dog hair or something. Who knows. What a wild fix!
