Limited interface after using RDP from Windows 10

Post by gianni2fists »

Greetings/Apologies,

I'm running into this exact issue --> viewtopic.php?t=329787 from last year, only I'm on Mint 20.2 Cinnamon. I'm running on a Lenovo/IBM Thinkpad and prefer to RDP into it from my Windows 10 workstation so I can get dual-monitors and all that. Most of the time this works beautifully, but intermittently the interface looks like the below screenshot whether I access it locally or via RDP:

Sometimes a reboot fixes it and sometimes it doesn't. I found the afore-linked issue and that partially worked for me, but threw some errors and I'd lose the system menu when closing that terminal. I imagine this is because of the different versioning. Anyhow, this leads me here to this moment where I'm asking how I can correct this and avoid causing it to happen in the future. (I don't see any root-owned items anywhere in the home directory)

Thought I'd post a picture of what it looks like when it's "correct".

I'm on Mint 20.2 Cinnamon
Desktop: Xfce 4.16.0
A bit contradictory (or you have both environments installed); however, according to pictures, it looks like xfce does not load your custom settings for some reason; maybe xfce users will know more.

I'm new to using linux with a GUI. I installed what I thought was the Cinnamon edition from https://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=288
Not sure why it's using xfce.

Just thought I'd circle back to inform anyone reading this that I was dead wrong. Ended up re-downloading and re-installing Mint on this system and sure enough, it's a different GUI. I'm legit using Cinnamon for real this time and no longer experiencing the issue. Sorry to bring the bonehead goods here and thanks for the assist.

Good to hear you resolved it. One thing you should know - if you want to run graphical GUI apps as root over rdp, you need to launch them using sudo, not from cinnamon menu.
