Increase window resolution

Post by rodrigosantellan »

Hi, I just got a Thinkpad T14 and installed Linux Mint 20.2 XFCE.

My problem is that the maximum resolution I can put is 1366x768~60Hz on the configuration panel... It should go up 1920x1080...

Is really unusable to use it like this. The really strange part is that in .config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/displays.xml I have that resolution but can't use it.

Code: Select all

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

<channel name="displays" version="1.0">

There's actually not a lot of useful system information there, copy/paste the text output on inxi -Fxz run in the terminal.

Hi,

Are you sure that your computer supports 1920x1080 display?

To solve the problem with resolution of the TC's laptop once and for all, he should post the output of the command from his terminal:

Code: Select all

xrandr
And the output will show the real resolution of laptop's display, something like that:

Code: Select all

user@pc:~$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 16384 x 16384
VGA-1 disconnected primary (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
HDMI-1 connected 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 476mm x 268mm
   1920x1080 60.00*+
   1680x1050 59.88
   1600x900 60.00
   1280x1024 75.02 60.02
   1280x800 59.91
   1152x864 75.00
   1280x720 60.00
   1024x768 75.03 60.00
   832x624 74.55

Hi,

Not convinced by xrandr; here is the output for my computer:

Code: Select all

$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 16384 x 16384
VGA-0 disconnected primary (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
LVDS-0 connected 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 382mm x 215mm
   1920x1080 60.02*+
HDMI-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
My screen does not support 16384x16384, it is limited to full HD 1920x1080.

And xrandr on the OP computer will show its screen actually uses a 1366x768 resolution, as shown by the output of its inxi command, and with a maximum possible "impossible" resolution of 16384x16384 .

Best thing is to be sure of computer screen capability, by referring to the computer specs, before any attempts.

Regards,

MN

xrandr does not say your screen supports 16384x16384. You are not correctly reading the output.

That maximum screen size is the total maximum permitted by all screens attached to all the connections. If one attaches multiple screens to their computer, the total of all the individual screens can not exceed the maximum listed.

The maximum for your LVDS-0 screen is specifically listed under that port. The limited data you posted indicates it is currently running at its preferred resolution and frequency.

Mike, it's obvious I showed out the example of output for xrandr command to check whether TC's laptop supports resolution more than 1366x768 or not. And, of course, to see the list of supported resolutions by his laptop (including current one). Sure, it would be right to mention laptop's specs in the first post but rodrigosantellan didn't do it. So, if his laptop supports 1920x1080, he is able to write script, make it executable, put it to autostart and voila! Certainly, it could be done with GUI like ARandr (click, click, save, reboot).

Hi,

Though I understand your answer, it is not what is written on xrandr output: "Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 16384 x 16384".

I have only one screen, screen 0, and according to xrandr output this screen is able of a minimum 8x8, a maximum 16384x16384, and is currently set to 1920x1080...

The way it is written in the output is at least ambiguous, and very misleading.

Hi,

At this time it is obvious for me that his computer is not able to display more than 1366x768, since specs available for his exact model on internet show the display is a 1366x768 screen, his inxi output shows the current setting is 1366x768, and Mint by default sets the resolution to its maximum.

I have only one screen, screen 0,
Your one display is not screen 0. Your one display is LVDS-0.

From man xrandr:
--screen snum
This option selects which screen to manipulate. Note this refers to the X screen abstraction, not the monitor (or output).
MikeNovember wrote: Mon Nov 29, 2021 5:08 am...Mint by default sets the resolution to its maximum.
Mint does its best to set the resolution at the preferred resolution of the monitor (which does not necessarily mean the maximum depending upon the monitor), but that does not always happen.

However, if the laptop only has the maximum resolution you found in those specs, then it is not possible to increase it beyond that.

Hi all,

The problem was mine I took the word when they gave me the computer. Reading the specs I can see it don't go bigger than this.

Know I learn how to force it with arand.

Thanks all for the help!.
