Black screen with cursor on login
When I activate to lock screen on sleep, on logging back in, I get a black screen with a movable cursor. And right click gives no context menu. Doesn't happen if I login immediately, but after some time. Suspending again and login in back immediately doesn't help, even via tty. I then give up and logout and lose my ongoing operations. This is happening since long and not recently.
How can I see the background processes while login, perhaps in tty? I think that should give a clue.

Re: Black screen with cursor on login
Sometimes screen issues after returning from sleep are related to graphics drivers. Please give us information about your install by entering this command in a terminal:
inxi -Fxxxrz

Re: Black screen with cursor on login
This may not help at all, but it's worth trying since it's easy enough to do, when your issue occurs try the following...
press CTRL+ALT+F2 (i.e. hold CTRL+ALT then press F2), wait some odd seconds, then press CTRL+ALT+F7 and see if things work again or not.
p.s. because I noticed when I had my primary screen (DisplayPort) going black after sitting overnight, almost like it's not active, and the secondary screen (TV(HDMI)) shows up I can do that and it gets things back to a usable state with all programs still running like usual and I can resume use like normal.

Re: Black screen with cursor on login
Do you have more than one desktop installed? Your inxi output indicates you have the Gnome desktop (which is not a supported desktop for Linux Mint), but you are showing the Xfce panel and windows manager.sidmint wrote: ⤴Mon Jan 24, 2022 5:28 am When I activate to lock screen on sleep, on logging back in, I get a black screen with a movable cursor. Some people, including the two in this topic [Workaround] Desktop is not visible, have been running into an issue with the desktop disappearing. They found a workaround, but I'm not sure if it will work for you.

Black screen with cursor on login
That was indeed helpful. Thank you. I found that "gnome-shell, gdm and gnomedesktop" related named packages were extra compared to a fresh install. Might have come during some tinkering, I don't remember. I unistalled them and now it shows xfce4 as desktop in inxi.
Re: Black screen with cursor on login
BUT the problem still persists! I found that now as it happens after suspending for some longer time. Here is the updated inxi output-

Did you try the workaround in the link?

Re: Black screen with cursor on login
But one thing I have say, earlier the problem used to occur in few hours of suspending. But that has not happened at all till now after removing the gnome related packages. The problem only occured once until now and it was after about one day of suspending. So I'm not sure whether problem even exists as one occurence isn't enough. So I'm waiting for it to happen again and then it'll be appropriate to proceed further with mentioned workaround.
Re: Black screen with cursor on login
The problem occured three times recently. And within few hours of suspending. I'll try the mentioned workaround [rm -R ~/.cache/sessions/*] next time it happens via tty.Did you try the workaround in the link?
Re: Black screen with cursor on login
I don't think this workaround works for me. I had cleared the directory beforehand and problem occurred while the directory was empty. When I ran the command during the issue via tty, no such file/directory was reported as expected.
Re: Black screen with cursor on login
Which directory are you referencing?
I was thinking of the
xfdesktop --reload
command referenced in that topic, but I see two other options listed.A woman typing on a laptop with LM20.3 Cinnamon.

I do not know enough about how Xfce works to have any guesses as why that might have happened. I did search on that phrase, but what I was finding did not relate to your situation.sidmint wrote: ⤴Wed Feb 09, 2022 11:21 amin tty gave:Code: Select all

Hopefully, someone more familiar with Xfce might have some ideas which could help you.

Re: Black screen with cursor on login
after moving mouse around, how long are you waiting to see a desktop environment?
i am running xfce but my system is a little bit more powerful than yours and have black screen for between 5-20 seconds after signing in from the lock screen.

Re: Black screen with cursor on login
Desktop normally appears along with cursor in less than 5 seconds post signin when issue doesn't occur, but when issue occurs I've waited far enough in several minutes.
