[SOLVED] Plank will only unhide when at the Top or Left position

Post by rodia77 »

Hi all, first time playing with Mint XFCE (Cinnamon on other machines).

Pretty much what the title says -- Plank will only appear on mouse pointer hover when it's positioned at the top or left, it doesn't get triggered when it's at the bottom or right, which is a problem for me because I want it at the bottom. Same behaviour for each hide mode, Pressure Reveal disabled.

I had MX Linux (systemd-less) on this machine before and Plank was working just fine.

Ideas? TIA.

Edit: This forum must have some supernatural enlightening effects on people, because the moment I posted, I got this idea of checking one thing more. So the issue was apparently connected to the fact that Display > Scale was set to 0.9x. After changing back to 1x the relevant inxi part changes, too:

Code: Select all

Display: x11 server: X.Org v: 1.21.1.3 compositor: xfwm v: 4.16.1 driver:
    X: loaded: modesetting unloaded: fbdev,vesa gpu: i915 display-ID: :0.0
    screens: 1
  Screen-1: 0 s-res: 1366x768 s-dpi: 96 s-size: 361x203mm (14.2x8.0")
    s-diag: 414mm (16.3")
  Monitor-1: eDP-1 res: 1366x768 hz: 60 dpi: 101
    size: 344x193mm (13.5x7.6") diag: 328mm (12.9") modes: 1366x768
OpenGL: renderer: Mesa Intel HD Graphics 400 (BSW) v: 4.6 Mesa 22.0.5
    compat-v: 3.1 direct render: Yes
But I had that scale set for a reason, my eyesight is bad and I need some kind of screen enlargement.

Mine works perfectly fine when positioned at the bottom in Xfce. What is the first configuration you have under the Hide Dock section?

Intellihide.
But as I said in my edit to the OP (perhaps didn't make myself clear enough), switching the scale back to 1.0x fixes the issue. So now the question is, how to have both the scale I want and Plank at the bottom.

If you disable intellihide, even with display scale < 1 Plank bar will remain. Intellihide doesn't work other than for desktop view >= 1. I have scale set to 1 and I find that comfortable, despite being shortsighted.

However, there are other ways to magnify the view in a window, zooming being the most obvious, eg, pressing Cntrl key and using middle mouse wheel to zoom in or out. That works in file manager or in a browser. If you want to magnify the view on the desktop, desktop-settings will incease the size of icons on the panel or on the desktop itself.

Thank you, Desktop Settings + Appearance should do the trick with adjusting the display to my eyesight without having to mess with the scale, I only configured XFCE once before and forgot which settings to look at. My take on the Plank not working at 0.9x is that its bottom and right trigger points were beyond the screen edges. Marking the topic solved.
