I think I am going to start from Cassandra and work my way up to Daryna.
I might have left an old config file in there and it could be causing the problems.
Something has to be making Firefox(all Mozilla browsers) act memory hungry.

Because it still should work the same even if others don't want to use it.
Also it's all Mozilla based browsers not just Firefox.

Firefox is my main browser. I support its use in Mint XFCE. FF is very functional and still growing in popularity, IMO.

You say Firefox 3 doesn't have the problem. Does anyone know when it will launch? Early 08 is as much as I know.

Incidentally, FF3 is supposed to be way a lot less hungry than FF2 in general, so even without this problem FF3 would use less resources.

I'm running XFCE in virtualbox with 512 mb ram.
I have removed compiz totally.
I have run Firefox for two hours and the memory use was max 72 mb with a lot of tabs opening and closing.
But it feels slow, somehow.

don't want to sound unpatient (i know i do), but what happened to Daryna XFCE?
is there any chance that there will be a final version, or will it be skipped and work will progress towards Elyssa XFCE beta?

Don't worry, I also wish the final was finished.
Not sure how long t will take but hope to find the problem.
Me and my wife had car accident and that has taken over on my time.
We are fine, the car isn't though.
Here are updates to mintDesktop and mintConfig.
mintDesktop is here http://linuxmint.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=56157#p56157
mintConfig is here http://linuxmint.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=110&t=9049

Also you need to edit your sources.list file.
gksu mousepad /etc/apt/sources.list
Delete everything in the old file and replace it with this.

I feel your pain merlwiz, I got rearended in a McDonald's drive thru. Thankfully my car has the worlds toughest bumper lol (has lifted a truck off the ground before) so no real damage except a small smudge was done.

About firefox, I have heard any edition currently out there is full of memory holes and leaks. So it sounds like it wouldn't be something you could fix, sounds more like a problem Mozilla has to address. I have always had problems with FF (freeze ups, crashes, etc) in both linux and windows worlds. Sadly though I can never find a Linux browser that comes close to it. Though if anyone knows of a simple yet feature rich browser that can work well in XFCE (preferably not GTK or QT dependant) let me know.

Xubuntu Gutsy and Daryna(main and KDE) doesn't have the same problem, it has to do with something in Daryna XFCE CE only.
Firefox 3.0 beta 3 doesn't the same amount of this problem, but if the others don't have this problem, then neither should XFCE CE.

Yes Opera is superior to Firefox but it has some problems with flash... and it's closed!

But have you tried Kazehakase as used by Fluxbuntu and Ubuntulite?

It's a "Gecko based web browser using GTK", "a web browser using the Mozilla rendering and networking engines."

Midori is also interesting but still in its early stages of development, so most of the options are not configurable. It is a project to watch. "Let's hope that Midori won't reach the bloatedness of the other browser that was supposed to be lightweight"...

Yesterday I reinstalled mint Xfce. From the hardyheron (ubuntu 8.4) repositaries
I updated xfce to the 4.42 version and firefox the 3.0b3 version. No problem until
now. Not bugs on Xfce and a good work of the browser. Try and good luck.
I love Xmint :-)

I agree with you fully MerlWiz. FireFox should work the same in XFCE CE as it does in the other distros. I was mearly pointing out that FF has a history of being a memory blackhole. I've had it hog loads of memory in Windows too. But good luck on trying to fix it. Any idea if this was a problem in XFCE Cassandra or just in Daryna?

Cassandra worked correctly, but Celena and Daryna doesn't.

I copied that sources.list as well and hope to put it to good use once my new hard drive gets in. Apparently all my installing and testing of distros took its toll on my HD and it is almost 100% dead. So I'm replacing my 40gb dead one with a higher rpm 120gb :D. Yes it makes me happy and I haven't made up my mind yet but hope to install Mint XFCE either Cassandra or Daryna whichever is ready. Keep up the good work MerlWiz and really Cassandra XFCE was so good I don't think we're missing to much by not having Daryna yet.
