Zebra stripes graphics bug?

Post by toomanyquestions » Fri Jul 01, 2011 12:14 pm

Machine info
e machines T2958
celeron 2.66
cache ram 256 mb
total ram 1016 g
dual 80 g hds, triple boot [windows 60~ & Watt OS 15~, M9 XFCE 77~ w/2g swap]

Problem: after 1 hr + of flawless performance, I left my fresh (two days old) M9 xfce for a few minutes...When I came back, half of the screen was black & the other half was flashing zebra stripes (edit: it just did the same thing running a m9 flux live cd). I'm beginning to suspect the triple boot is causing problems for this modest machine... Has anyone encountered similar problems?

Please post what graphics card you're using.

You can find it out using this command:

Code: Select all

inxi -G
Edit: The most common fix for your problem is using a newer version of Linux.

Sounds like an issue between your graphics card and the linux kernel, not because you are triple booting. I had the same issue with Mint 9 Xfce on a machine at home, it would work fine for a while but then the bottom half of the screen would go black and the top half would have vertical black and white stripes. I tried various options to disable kernel modesetting but nothing worked, eventually I installed Mint 10 Lxde and it works perfectly now. Hopefully AlbertP can help you fix it.

You described exactly my problem. I couldn't (and didn't) say it better.

Albert, thanks much for your input, I'll probably upgrade.
