There is an issue with FF in XFCE, not a large one but....

After this question I answered another and I then remembered that there is a memory leak that needs to be fixed in the final release

The synaptic issue might be gksudo related,
Try:
and change "Capture mode" from enable to disable.
It worked for me in xubuntu with composite enabled, i had to wait 30 second os so for synaptic to open after i was promted for the password..
