New Build in coming

Post by MurphCID » Tue Oct 08, 2019 7:27 am

Well, I have decided its time to get the kids their own desktop so they quit using mine for gaming and homework (they like my dual monitors for their homework, etc). They use my desktop in preference to their laptops. Since both are in college and are required to do homework in Microsoft Office to turn in I will add that to the machine. So here are the specs:

MSI MPG X570 gaming edge mobo
Ryzen 3600 processor (best cost/performance IMHO)
ASUS ROG STRIX Radeon 5700
16 gb DDR 4 3200 Trident RGB ram
Samsung 970 500gb NvME boot drive
Crucial P1 1tb storage drive
San Disk 1024 mb Ultra II (taken from my current desktop- it has the games on it)
Corsair RMx 650 watt gold PSU
NZXT H510i case (white)
Logitech G513 Carbon keyboard (I love this clicky keyboard)- Or let them have my old K70 keyboard which is just gathering dust.
Logitech G502 mouse (I love this mouse)
Logitech G430 headphones
Logittech F310 game controller (taken from my machine)
My old Gateway 2000 speakers ($5 at a garage sale).
ASUS PB277Q monitor 2560x1440 (I have two and they are great monitors).
Winders 10 Home (I wish Linux was able to use iTunes, and MS Office, because if it could I would never touch Windows again, but the kids have to have Office for homework, and if they don't have iTunes they get anxiety since they live on their iPhones).
Office Student edition (No BS Office 365 here, I refuse to pay Danegeld to Microsoft each year).

If they already have laptops, you can just get monitors, keyboard, mouse (with docking station?) for their laptop. Then they can use the same machine for everything. By itself, laptops are not really productivity machines anyway and just having the monitor with K/B and mouse will improve the productivity. Also, monitors tend to outlive the machines anyway, so you will be using it for a while.

I'm also a father of two daughters. Never underestimate the manipulative acumen of daughters (I still do from time to time, unfortunately)....

They are almost as bad as the darn puppy, they just look at you with those pleading eyes, and something deep inside just wants to give in. But! They only get ONE desktop, and are banished from using mine! I will be strong, I will be firm, I will hold the line! I have already told them no 34" curved gaming monitor.

Well, my Christmas came early, I got this for myself: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/msi-gs-ser ... Id=6343295 The set up was...painful. The software was very non-intuitive, and things were well hidden so that you had to spend hours looking for things. Plus Microsoft was being its usual PITA it took almost two hours! to update to 1903. Another quirk is no matter what I did, the battery would not charge past 90% initially, then 80% later! I finally found a setting in an obscure menu where this "feature" (not a bug) was supposed to extend battery life. The screen is lovely, and 144 hz. Since it only has a 512gb ssd, and MSI makes it a real PITA to get to the additional slots (the motherboard is inserted upside down), I will have to later get a 1 gb M.2 SSD to expand storage. Games play well, battery life sucks (its a gaming machine, so what did I expect?). So I decided to take it for a run playing Civilization V, while listening to The HU, Sabaton, Nightwish, Rush, Blue Oyster Cult, and my other faves. Very nice, good loud sound. I'll see what it can do with a dual boot of Mint after I get that second SSD installed. I hear that MSI gaming laptops ARE NOT Linux friendly.

Agreed...after working on an older model MSI last month, i recommended to its owner that it would make a nice "home plate" for Fenway Park in Boston...cannot say i am really a fan of MSI after having to work on one...they are not very Linux friendly at all...DAMIEN

That laptop has 3 fans and vents everywhere, looks like a nice little heater for the winter. That 80% battery charging is to prolong Lithium ion battery life, I use an app on my cell phone for the same thing.

Your gamer daughter seen your new toy yet? Remember, Resistance is futile

She has the Dell G7 I bought two years ago, and she will not let me use it. She has not noticed this computer.....yet. The youngest is now complaining that her "old" iPhone 7 plus is too outdated, and she needs a new one. So I told her that she was welcome to get a new phone as long as she paid for it. That took all the joy out of it for her, she decided that her old phone worked just fine. All her friends just got new iPhone 11s, and she is using an "old" phone so she is embarrassed that her phone is so "out of date".
