Brought to you by the same folks who want me to live in a pod and 'own nothing and be happy' because I'm renting it all from the oligarchs.
Like Hell I will.
I'll pass on the bug protein.

Well if I had my druthers, I'd take a crispy roach over a wiggley sago larva...just about any day.

I don't like oysters, either!Kadaitcha Man wrote: ⤴Sun Apr 18, 2021 7:35 amWe eat these fellas after digging them out of rotten wood.

Witchetty grubs. Spike 'em on a stick, a quick wave over a flame and down they go. Better than oysters.

Seen an episode of "Survivorman" (Canadian dude) where he "fished" out a couple of those.Kadaitcha Man wrote: ⤴Sun Apr 18, 2021 7:35 am We eat these fellas after digging them out of rotten wood.
So happens a lot of his stuff is on youtube, if you care.

About minute 23:00 he finds his first grub, and he is quite excited.
Don't want to spoiler alert, but watch a couple more minutes.

Wouldn't touch it myself but honestly it amuses me that we in the West won't eat bugs but will pay premium prices for lobster. I mean, when they bait lobster traps first they let the bait rot so much that nothing but a lobster would eat it.

Re: Deep-fried cockroaches
There is a zoo nearby that serves fried cockroaches, grasshoppers and mealworms.
They are quite tasty.
Cockroaches taste like buttery popcorn.
Grasshoppes and mealworms are sweet, because they are roasted with honey.

Re: Deep-fried cockroaches
Not so sure about the cockroaches or the grubs. Hunger can help a person slurp down almost anything. I wish I still had my copy of the marine survival handbook and it had quite a few recipes for interesting survival meals.
I can say that I have eaten ants, bees and chocolate covered bees. They all came in a what looked like snuff tins and they were 'edible'. The ants tasted like vinegar and the chocolate covered bees tasted like chocolate. I can't for the life of me remember what the plain bees tasted like, must not have been good.
When people up north use maggots for ice fishing, they must be kept warm to stay alive. I've seen people with lips full of them, they stick them in like pinch of chewing tobacco. Mine stayed inside my jacket, thank you.

Re: Deep-fried cockroaches
No need for me to see it. It happens here almost every day. I live on a property and have weeping willows that are getting bulldozed. As soon as we see the kookaburras swoop in we know there's witchetty grubs in the timber, then we fight with the 'burras over who gets the goodiesrickNS wrote: ⤴Sun Apr 18, 2021 10:08 amSeen an episode of "Survivorman" (Canadian dude) where he "fished" out a couple of those.Kadaitcha Man wrote: ⤴Sun Apr 18, 2021 7:35 am We eat these fellas after digging them out of rotten wood.

But, the show is at least in my opinion, also otherwise somewhat entertaining, and someone else (maybe you to) might enjoy it?
In another episode, in Papua New Guinea, he gets into some betel nut, it's quite funny.
