(SOLVED) 21H1 , move from PM961 to 980 Pro Sammy SSD M.2 , Win won't boot.

Post by Kris345 »

EDIT: SOLVED - user error - apparently poorly plugged internal cable. My bad.

I did post this to a MS forum but you guys generally know more than they do...

Mixed Win10 21H1 and Mint SSD.
Was on a PM961 256GB M.2 SSD.
Image it with Macrium.
Put 980 Pro in laptop.
Macrium restore image.
Mint will boot, Win will not.
Tried rescue with 21H1 stick but it just blinks so apparently bad.
Tried rescue with 20H2 stick :
Rescue unable to repair.
Command line:
/bootrec /ScanOs finds -0- op sys. So I can't do anything else.
My guess is that something is hosed with EFI??? but I have no idea.
When I try boot to it, the circle of dots goes round and round and after maybe 30 secs just hangs/stops.
alt-ctrl-del does nothing, esc does nothing, just power off.

GPARTED says this.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't know where to put this so Mod move if necessary. Thanks.

Mint will boot, Win will not.
Is this selecting the windows bootloader via BIOS or from the grub menu?

In mint open a terminal and sudo os-prober, did it find win?
In mint, open disks and mount the efi partition, is there a windows folder in the efi folder?

Long time since I used macrium, does it allow you to look inside an image file and see files/folders?

I assume you still have the 256GB SSD and can put it back if necessary?

As long as this is the Linux Mint forum, Windows problems will be moved to "Open Chat", because we silently refuse to create a "Windows" sub-forum.

either I tried both.
In mint open a terminal and sudo os-prober, did it find win?
yes

Code: Select all

kris@kris-ThinkPad-T570:~$ sudo os-prober
[sudo] password for kris:
/dev/sda: open failed: No medium found
/dev/sda: open failed: No medium found
/dev/nvme0n1p1@/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi:Windows Boot Manager:Windows:efi
kris@kris-ThinkPad-T570:~$
In mint, open disks and mount the efi partition, is there a windows folder in the efi folder?
yes
admin:///boot/efi/EFI/Microsoft
Long time since I used macrium, does it allow you to look inside an image file and see files/folders?
I know I could under windows. probably could under standalone stick but don't know if it would edit it. Might be able to edit it here under Mint since it appears to have mounted it.
I assume you still have the 256GB SSD and can put it back if necessary?
yes.

EDIT: just realized I could easily look at image under Mint under VMware under Macrium.

Again, thanks!!!

The fact that os-prober found it and win is in your grub menu suggests that the problem is not in the bootloader or efi partition. I wonder if macrium did something stupid with the UUID on your win C: partition. If you want (and can check UUIDs), then blkid in a terminal will give you the UUIDs for the new M.2 drive. Put the old one back and repeat.

There are linux alternatives to macrium.

I did compare the UUIDs on both and they were the same.

However, in the process of simply plug old, plug new, NOW it works fine, so user error and poorly plugged internal cable to adapter.

Many thanks for your time!!!
