Minty Laptop?

Post by steveking » Mon Jul 02, 2012 4:45 am

So I am looking into getting a new laptop, and was wandering if anyone knew of any laptops that work well with Linux Mint? Open for suggestions! I thought about a system76 laptop but for that price and spec it doesnt seem worth the spend.

Any ideas?

Any laptop with Intel HD Graphics should work - nvidia or AMD may cause problems in laptops (hybrid graphics). Samsung, HP and Lenovo have some good laptops with Intel HD graphics, but other manufacturers are usually fine as well.

Laptops with Linux pre-installed would be a good match. See a list of vendors selling laptops with Linux pre-installed at http://linuxpreloaded.com/.

Wait a minute. Nvidia stuff works great on laptops. As a matter of fact, since most people don't even attempt heavy number crunching or most games on laptops, many will do just fine. I have an HP/Compaq NX9420. I have a Core 2 Duo 2.16 GHz CPU, 4G RAM, Nvidia Quadro NVS 510M, 500G drive......You can get these refurbished in excellent condition cheap. Mint just cranks on this laptop. It smokes the other OS I have installed, Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit. I have a 17" screen in 1680 x 1050 24-bit color. The Windows Nvidia driver for this machine is actually intentionally crippled. But the Linux Nvidia driver uses everything this GPU has. Awesome. ATI chips do not always play nice with Linux. If you want video acceleration the Intel chip is anemic. Nvidia is marvelously stable, compatible and powerful.

Oh, by the way, games do crank on this laptop because of the Nvidia GPU I have.

Check Ebay. There's a bunch of them on there cheap.

Older (Windows Vista age) laptops with nvidia are indeed fine with Linux but new laptops have "Optimus" which is working badly unless you install Bumblebee. So I'd rather choose Intel, if that is fast enough for you.

Thanks for the advice! I liked the sound of having Linux pre-installed, but for the price the spec isn't amazing! I shall check everything out and let you know where my thoughts are! Lets hope we have another piece of hardware joining the Mint Family soon!

Nvidia and AMD and everything else works fine with 13 Mate on an Acer laptop that had Vista on it.

I'm not sure what kind of specs you're looking for, but I recently bought one of these
http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-A53E-AS31-15 ... =asus+a53e
Good enough for me

All hardware is supported out of the box without any proprietary drivers.

Battery life is decent, lasts me all day (after some tweaks)

The cooling system is very good. Hot air blows out the side vent but even under heavy use this thing stays cool to touch

RAM and hard drive easily upgradeable (I put an SSD in mine)

One warning though, the default Windows install on this thing comes preloaded with a lot of bloatware and runs pretty slow.
Probably not a problem if you're just going to put Linux on it like I did, though.
