Turn your keyboard into a music instrument on Linux Mint 17

Postby Zorba » Tue May 20, 2014 4:19 am

Today I have discovered a new application that I want to talk about. It is called "Piano Booster" and it is in your software manager if you are runniung Linux Mint. This application is meant to teach you how to play piano with a MIDI keyboard. But hey you still can use you PC keyboard and choose an instrument from a bunch of available instruments and start playing your favourite tune. To install open a terminal and run:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install pianobooster

One thing you have to remember to install "Timidity" with this command line:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install timidity

and choose "TiMidity:1" as an output from the MIDI setup.

or else you want get any sound at all.

It is easy to use and sounds fantastic :D :D

Enjoy music :D :D

Or alternatively, you could get the latest version of LMMS (currently available in KXStudio PPA, the Ubuntu 14.04 repository version is sadly still broken), which allows you to play various native software synths, as well as Windows VST plugins via WINE, using either your computer keyboard or a MIDI keyboard, and also allows you to record what you play, or to use a sequencer to put down note sequences and play them back.
