If not Mint, then...

Post by Fred Barclay » Mon Feb 23, 2015 11:46 am

If Mint didn't exist, what OS would you use? Ubuntu? Fedora? Windows (screams in anguish) ? One of the OS X's ?
I would use Ubuntu Mate. I really like the desktop--it's light and easy on my system, and I give it high marks overall. Probably in a few years I'd move over to Debian Testing or Unstable--likely Testing.

Edit: If you want, go to http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=61&t=189720 to tell what other Linux distros you've tried and your impressions!

Xubuntu, because I love Xfce. And if the *buntu's would cease to exist (God forbid), then openSUSE.

I like XFCE
--but I would probably use Debian Straight up or Arch: I could always go back to Gentoo, as I quite liked their compile from source idea, and it wasn't that great a burden
--except I don't like any single or tab panes file manager, always preferring the midnight commander or similar (xtree) styles: and I understand it's part of the system that maybe comes from the parent source

Mainly I like the apt package system, although using Yum i found RPM fine
--I wasn't even bothered by Suse's YAST, despite all the complaints about it
  • And only didn't really find Suse's original server/desktop/developer configurations that valuable, but saved thinking about "what do I need to make it run"
, never getting to the Suse Opensuse model , but that's been a while back...
--I prefer to make choices on my own, but I don't object to distributions making selections for me, as long as i can easily remove the selections i don't wish to use
Tighter integration and cooperative developments will tend to make that more difficult going forward..
I did look at plan 9 once, but if I was going that road, I would be using QNX
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QNX
--which I did use in a business at one time

It's too bad that the more interesting systems tend to get swallowed up by bigger fish.

Windows, OpenBSD and FreeBSD (in descending order of importance).
Linux is not the only answer! :: eD2k/Kad mirrors for Linux Mint and LMDE.
Users who misspell "Windows" as "Windoze" intentionally will be considered stupid.

If not Mint:
Manjaro (Xfce), Ubuntu Mate, Linux Lite (Xfce), Xubuntu, Debian (Xfce or Mate), Sparky Linux (Xfce).
Linux everywhere. Active Distros in my many computers: LM17.3 (Cinnamon, Xfce); LM18.1 (Cinnamon,Xfce); LMDE 2 (Mate), MXLinux (Xfce), Debian 9 (Xfce).

Maybe strange, but definitely not a Ubuntu. Strange because Mint depends on Ubuntu and I am using mint. No, I think I would start using Open Suse. Still like the way they setup things, how Yast is working, it has a great installer and together with my beloved KDE desktop I can make it look like the way I have setup Mint nowadays.
Why not Ubuntu? Well, I don't like where Ubuntu is going. I hate Unity, I hate their cooperation with Amazon which shows up as search results. Tried Kubuntu some time before but somehow things don't work like in Mint KDE. No Mint would not mean the end of the world, but it is getting pretty close.

Debian, or Slackware (if I could get skype with PA working, I'd still be on it).

I still use OS X alongside Mint at home and Windows at work (and at home on rare occasion).

If Mint ceased to be and I was forced to go to another distro? Let's see. Lubuntu did OK for my low-power needs and has a nice professional polish. For my higher-end workstations, I'd probably try Fedora.

Some OS X and WinXP too; I'm multi-platform like that.

Probably Voyager, Xubuntu, or LXLE, which might work on my really old PC when Mint 13 Xfce expires. Mint 17 Xfce was too much for my older PC so it runs 13 until - ? Then maybe I'll try LXLE on that one. But Mint 17 Xfce is great on my newer PC!
