Re: So I tried to install Windows OS today and...
So fed up with dealing with my father-in-laws Windows XP, I bought him a hard drive switcher unit that sits in the 5.25" bay of his PC, and he either selects Windows XP or Mint.
I installed Mint over 1.5 years ago and I have not had a single problem, the XP drive has been out once for a complete reinstall because they what they thought was a safe download for the grandchildren turned out to be spyware that took over the whole browser.
I don't know what later versions of Windows are like and whether Windows is still hassle.
Father-in-law likes Mint, apart from the odd moan about not being able to update his tom tom.

Re: Your opinions on Windows 10 so far..
You are correct when you say some unwanted options can be switched off. But, the opposite is also doable. By that I mean, do you really think MSFT is going to allow users to keep those unwanted options switched off permanently? MSFT means everything it says in their 45 page manifesto known as the Windows 10 EULA.capivara wrote:Well, it works. It works fast.
However, it would be completely deleted by any decent a anti-spyware program. Won't keep it, too many privacy concerns (yes, I waded through 43 pages of privacy policy and such). Most unwanted options can be switched off, but not all. I especially liked (cough) this one:
We will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders), when we have a good faith belief that doing so is necessary to protect our customers or enforce the terms governing the use of the services.
Hans
Since MSFT has went to great lengths to invade user's privacy with Windows 10, once MSFT detects the unwanted options users have switched off, MSFT will turn those unwanted options right back on with KB updates through Automatic Updates.

Well, here goes day 2 of install indeed....z31fanatic wrote:Or maybe a day or twoJohnBobSmith wrote:[
Ah, good to know I wont be using that desktop for a few hours while it updates
I dont know know if its MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) corrupting stuff, or a bad driver, or what have you, but every time im close to finishing, the OS completely fails, BSOD's, or simillar. The only way to fix is re-install again from clean empty disc. I just tried system restore with multiple different restore points, and nope. Even my clean install system restore point just failed to, well, restore itself. The boot fails to work each and every time, using installation disc to repair the OS does nothing.
So here I go, installing clean from the disc for the third time. I'm not touching/adding *any* software until I know its 110% updated. Then I will use Ninite mass installer to get my favorite applications and keep them up to date, similar to Mint
The things I do for my only little brother...

Because of the massive privacy concerns, market share wise, if enough people reject Windows 10 like they rejected Windows 8, I have a hunch there will be another Windows version and it won't be another 10 point something.BlueKnight wrote:There will not be a next.revivecomputers wrote:...until they bring out the next OS.

Re: Your opinions on Windows 10 so far..
W10 Beats GNU/Linux on most fronts:
Fast boot times
Intuitive user interface
Multi-touch
Supports most PC hardware
No bloathware (Office, Graphic programms are not pre-installed)
Integration in a Windows Domain Server without problems
hiDPI support
Only the footprint is larger, but who cares about that nowedays with SSDs sizes being avordable.
It's a pitty that MS bowed for the user demand of a desktop. The desktop metaphore should be something of a far and dark past (XParc Lisa, TOS/GEM, remember those?)
Overall it has a freshnes that GNU Linux long has lost. (Nice try gnome-shell but no cigar)

it doesn't do this on my LinuxMint MATE: it does this on every Windows since 7. Try to find this setting as a new user on LinuxMint: is it in Control Center? in Dconf-settings? in Compiz? Windows settings? Or do I have to install again another tool to do this? (GNU/Linux is such a mess, but we were talking W10, sorry)
Re: Your opinions on Windows 10 so far..
I dual boot between Mint Cinnamon 17.2 and Windows 10. Windows 10 will not replace Mint Cinnamon but it is working great for me...I do not like all the spying 10 does. I have turned off Cortana and every other thing I could find that has to do with privacy. I have a local account instead of a Microsoft account. In the end Windows 10 is way better then Windows 8 \ 8.1 but not has good as Linux Mint Cinnamon

right-click / uninstall.and I hate why I have junk apps I cannot uninstall such as Music
Re: Your opinions on Windows 10 so far..
Try doing that with Edge and Cortana. Tell me the result.thking2 wrote:right-click / uninstall.and I hate why I have junk apps I cannot uninstall such as Music
See why I enjoy Open Source? That is one of the (many) reasons.
Re: So I tried to install Windows OS today and...
I've been fortunate to not have to use my Windows partition for the last 3 months
I fear going back though...updates might be painful because ever since I upgraded to 8.1 I can only shut down Windows from the command line and I can only do security updates because it seems like each time a chunk of updates comes out, there's 1-2 packages that makes my updates fail and I'm not fond of having to play trial and error with updates. Needless to say, this is the only Windows install where I've had a pretty borked system. My first build with Windows 7 worked like a dream, and my other builds and reinstalls that I do for others turn out well too. But Windows updates are the most atrocious things ever

I just read the fine print on MS' website. It says W10 will have Windows DVD player for a limited period and then you'll have to pay for it. Why would anyone pay for it when you can download VLC and others for free. Or am I missing something?
Re: Your opinions on Windows 10 so far..
From what I understood if you did the upgrade via the little icon in the tray the DVD player would be free and you would not have to pay later--those who upgraded by downloading the ISO would not get the free DVD player but would have to purchase it. Either way VLC is much bettermintybits wrote:I just read the fine print on MS' website. It says W10 will have Windows DVD player for a limited period and then you'll have to pay for it. With their new business model "Windows as a service"... Expect more of this to come.mintybits wrote:I just read the fine print on MS' website. I can see people being unable to boot their machines because of insufficient "boot credits". They will go as far as their users let them go.
LOL!

Pjotr,Pjotr wrote:W10 disappoints me. For two reasons:
1. It reset my UEFI to its default settings, thus temporarily disabling my dual boot;
2. It's W10 Home, so I have to live with compulsory automatic updates ("don't shut down your computer; installing update 1 from 256").
I have installed W10 this morning and it took me hours to change the largest spyware software in the world into an operating system. What are they thinking? If you install it the way MS wants you to they absolutely know everything about you, every mouse-click, every keyboard key you press, EVERYTHING.
About the updates: it is possible to change the settings for that in the advanced options of the updates section in the control panel. Standard, updates are installed in the background but, since we are talking about Windows, there has to be a reboot. The reboot is, with the default settings, done when MS wants it, but you can change that to plan the reboot when it is more convenient for you. Have a look in the control panel.
Re: Your opinions on Windows 10 so far..
Ahh, you reminded me, It's so freaking annoying, even a tiny tool like teracopy needs a reboot, and whenever you go to install something, most of the time you need to prepare yourself for a reboot. This is really the most annoying and frustrating thing in a OS.DeMus wrote:since we are talking about Windows, there has to be a reboot.
Come on windows... why do I have to stop work and reboot every time something new is introduced into you? It doesn't make any sense...
Changing the Path environment variable in windows needs a must have reboot, so tools who need to do that will also require a reboot. It's not the flaw of the softwares but it's the flaw of the OS itself.

Re: Your opinions on Windows 10 so far..
Been playing with it a bit more the past couple of days and I keep discovering new things.
The Music app has native support for FLAC and ALAC music files. This was never the case before so it is cool that these formats are now supported.
I haven't tried AAC as I don't have any music in that format.
