Just kicked my drive and it's dead...

Post by Chiefahol » Thu Aug 20, 2015 10:38 am

Turn around to visit my kitchen, trip straight over my external kicking it to the ground mid-transfer...

*grinding & ticking noise*

Ouch.. i just killed my drive.. luckily i had nothing irreplaceable on it!

Be sure to back up all your data, disks do not last.

Ouch, that does suck. In the future you may want to look at an SSD with USB 3.0 if you can. The speed and safety (IE reduced risk of death after being dropped) increases would be huge. SSD's have electronic wear and tear, sure. But I have yet to have a flash drive go bunk on me, and I abuse my flash drives. I'm almost certain the finite read/writes stuff or whatever is not true, or all 3 of my flash drives should be dead.

Just something to consider. :)

You have to be very careful to never rely on a device, even it's an SSD!!

SSDs are not a substitute for a backup regime. Ever. Every device will eventually break down. That being said yes SSDs are way more drop proof.

I have had SSDs break down already. I have also had my friends SSDs break down. Know how much a serious SSD recovery costs? Way more than a serious HDD recovery it turns out!

Head Replacement for a HDD in my city: $1500

Firmware unlock for an SSD in my city: $4000

Moral of the story: ALWAYS back up. Luckily with this lost data i had done exactly that so i suffered no data loss!! (Aren't i clever?)

I wouldn't call it being clever. I'd call it being smart.

As for SSD's, if you backup data, put into a safe and never use it until next backup, you'd be okay. If the safe ever got dropped or whatever, then your data would still be okay. That said, $4000 for a firmware unlock is... So it's up to you I guess. I am glad your data is still safe somewhere else though, thats good. :)

I know right! Turns out the equipment to perform these controller fixes costs about 10-12K. And there is almost nobody asking for proffessional SSD recovery yet, so.. yeah massive prices, very opportunistic in my city at the moment.
