Win XP is very slow, loading for more than 15 min on every stage

Post by kuman »

What the reason might be?
I uninstalled the PC Tools AV.

insufficient resources will cause that, to happen.

from My Computer - properties - general:
what does the system information say ?.
- post that information, back here.
is the PC running SP3 ?.
& if so - does it have at least 1Gb ram installed.

A lot of things could happened. Did it happen right after you uninstalled said AV? After a reboot?

The thing that I find most common with Windows slow booting is RAM failure.

There is apropriate forum to ask such questions and get skilled answers

Actually I could have suggested memtest86+.

There are other methods as well, like if they have more than one stick of RAM they could pull all but one and see if any fail.
With windows you will know right away if one does because Windows will not load.

But I didn't want to get into all that before having more information about their system and what they did before it started acting like it is.

It depends on what is meant by slow at booting.

If the machines was running fine and then SUDDENLY became slow than - yes, RAM should be checked.

But we are talking an incremental process over time and when we say 'boot' we mean 'to the point where the GUI starts and you can run an application' then often the problem is a corrupted registry.

If I have seen one Windows machine running like a dog due to a duffed registry I have seen a hundred.
Unfortunately, it is all but impossible to clean a registry properly when it gets into a state and re-install is the only route which, these days, is interesting. How would XP be activated? (The last set of XP DVD's required activation.) The so called registry cleaners don't and can't. Many will leave Windows in a worse state than before.

Installing lots of fonts can also slow GUI boot times considerably! The Windows GUI will start up normally but then there is a looonnnngggggggg delay before you get access to applications with the hard drive thrashing.

Just sayin'.

It all happened after I installed an app called My PCBackup. After I uninstalled it all My Docs folders got flooded w notepad files with the same content which appear first after every reboot of Win XP. I uninstalled the AV on Fr after many reboots. It kept blocking explorer from opening. I can post the doc if requested.

It's XP PROFESSIONAL, Ver 2002, SP 3, 2 Gb Ram

2 mistakes at one place:

XP is out of support since 2 years. Going online with this OS means playing Russian Roulette.
My Backup is a Potentially Unwanted App, which usually comes by downloading and installing untrusted software or from untrusted source. My Backup is designed to behave, as it does for you.

You can try this.

Better: Remove XP. Or - if Windows is needed for some reason - disconnect it from the Internet.

Luckily I read this b4 the hack.
Though I couldn't install any of the AV prog I found. They all crush b4 the end of the installation. Or need to get more files online.

Can someone help me how to run this App: grub4dos-0.4.4 in a terminal? I unzipped the zip file. I need to reboot in DOS. Booting in safe mode doesnt speed it up, Now it takes up to 45 mins.

Maybe try a "lighter" live CD to boot into - would give you an idea how the hardware is - a version of "puppy" usually worked well for me.

If the hardware is good enough - hate to say it but reinstall XP and probably keep it offline OR if your hardware will do it; run it in a "virtualbox" on a Linux host. I have a Canon scanner that only works with XP despite the "correct" drivers from them for Win7, haven't tried Win10 yet.

Had a friend who's windows machine took forever to load, the hard drive never stopped thrashing about, figured it was on a "bot" network or similar (she's not very careful); reinstalled everything and it worked fine.

Not if the HD/partition is reformatted, which is usually the case for fresh install.

I managed to install GParted on a USB stick & managed to boot up my Acer Aspire One which had Linux Maya 13. Though when I run GP it couldn't find any file system on the 8 GB HD. Plus it couldn't get me online with its featured Web browser.
What should I do?

It is possible the main disk has bad sectors.

This would corrupt the install and cause it to act poorly.

Always check the S.M.A.R.T values on a HDD before reusing it!

I got Lucid Puppy, installed it on a stick & now writing from my pc. Puppy seems to be working more than fine for me. I can mount all of the partitions. Will see how Sea Monkey gonna work on different sites.
Any help how can I remove the malware files in the partitions with Puppy?
