Do you prefer Web Mail, or a Desktop Client?

Post by TheDewOnTheMint » Tue Mar 01, 2016 2:32 am

Hello! I'm just curious to see whether people here prefer Webmail (Your email website) or a desktop client. (Thunderbird, Evolution, etc)

Personally, I prefer Webmail but don't use it as I like how Thunderbird makes email better for the power users..

i always used to do web mail, but then i realised i wanted the integration into my desktop. so for the past couple of years i have been using a desktop client.

i dont understand how that is considered not modern. i like being able to right-click files and immediately email them, or there was a time i used minitube for youtube videos, and you can share via email. i cannot think of the other things. i generally prefer it, very fast, the program i use is Sylpheed, yes its old and maybe quirky, but i configured it, and keep a backup of the setup.

the way web mail is nowadays, i find it hard to deal with, so i would choose a program for some sanity anyway.

Edit:
i actually receive and generally deal with emails through an app on my phone (k-9 for non-polling immediate delivery), and have the desktop email program set to not notify me of anything, it passively sits in the notification area. it gets used plenty when i share things with people, sometimes i will want or need to interact with it directly though.

I like a client, mine is SeaMonkey. It lets me read my email even when I'm offline (yes, that can happen).

I prefer a desktop client. Mail can be read and backed-up offline. I used Thunderbird for many years but recently I have switched to FossaMail (from the Pale Moon browser team.)

I use Thunderbird most of the time. I have it configured to leave mail on the server, and every now and then I log into the webmail interface and delete old messages.

This is a mystery. You do use TB because of better power usage, but you prefer Webmail? I cannot follow.

I use TB and POP3 as I have with this solution all offline available. A few weeks ago my ISP hat a technically problem which didn't let me connect to the Internet for one day, until a member of the technical staff had found and solved the issue. With Webmail or IMAP I wouldn't had been able to read the send / received mails for reference (letter, phone calls) or to take a look into my address book.
Not to think about the case, that an e-mail provider could also get into the same trouble as this forum. Or he could come into a situation similar as Lavabit.

That's also possible with IMAP ;)

Client all the way for me. It gives me a lot more control and a consistent interface. I have 9 accounts whith 5 different providers for work, online shopping, family and friends and so on. Logging in and out of every one just to check the mail would drive me crazy. And of course, there's GPG: hard to use it with webmail without taking many manual extra steps.

Possible - yes, but not the idea behind IMAP.
Regarding privacy protection and safety against connectivity problems (as I described) POP3 is always the winner (of course only if you do not leave the received mails on the server).

I like Thunderbird because of Enigmail... makes signing/encrypting emails a lot easier.

However, sometimes the browser is more convenient for me, so I voted "Both."

I voted Evolution. It lets you encrypt emails.
You can also have several account in only one window. This is convenient.
If it ain't broke, fix it until it is.

Webmail! Gmail is simply unbeatable. Feature-rich as no client can ever hope to be, and with secure two-factor authentication, even by means of a FIDO U2F security key.

The last time I used a client, was about five years ago. I used Thunderbird back then.

I don't know about that. But this is pretty impressive security in my book:

I'm.confused.. I use xfce and thunar file manager, so I right-click a file and choose mailto, can't remember if that's in a submenu. it opens sylpheed compose window with files attached.

but I may email from image viewer 'mirage', using my custom shortcut keys.
