...and for argument's sake - could only have one exterior, what would you want that exterior to be?

it wouldn't be a Telephone Box - that's so 60s
it would be a Portaloo - those cabinets are everywhere - concerts, parties - any large public event.

But, I don't use a TARDIS to time travel anymore. I use a different technology - and it's Linux powered!
