[LinuxMint] clan in UrbanTerror

Post by clem »

Hi,

Since some of us play UrbanTerror, we decided to create a team.. or should we call it, a clan :)

What is Urban Terror?

Urban Terror is one of the best First Person Shooter games available for Linux. It's free and open-source and it even works for Windows (so for people who multi-boot, you can play under both Linux and Windows). For more info on the game itself:

http://www.urbanterror.net

To install Urban Terror in Linux Mint, you get the zip file from here:

ftp://ftp.snt.utwente.nl/pub/games/urbanterror/UrbanTerror_41_FULL.zip

Then unzip it somewhere, give the executable run permissions and just run it from there. It comes with a Windows executable, and executables for both Linux x86 and Linux x64.

Why do we need a [LinuxMint] clan?

The main reason is for people who like both Urban Terror and Linux Mint to be able to find each other within the game and play together on the same servers.

Eventually, by making friends with other players and playing with the same people skills can develop and team-play can improve, in a similar way to other clans, clan members tend to learn and improve faster than individual players.

Finally, this also acts as some kind of promotion. People look at who frags them and who's at the top of the table once the map ends up... so if you've got [LinuxMint] written in your name and you do plenty of headshots you're likely to catch people's attention and indirectly promote our distribution.

How to join the clan?

- In Urban Terror, change your name and prefix it with [LinuxMint]. So if you used "Joe" before, just change it to "[LinuxMint]Joe".

- Reply to this forum thread, tell us your "[LinuxMint]nickname", your country and your timezone.

- When you play, before joining a server, lookup the names of the other [LinuxMint] clan members, and see if they're online. People close to your own timezone are more likely to be online, people on the other side of the globe are more likely to sleep... If you find members, join the same server as them and that way you'll get to play with them.

- Eventually, have a look on IRC to see if people want to play. server: irc.spotchat.org, channel: #linuxmint. In Linux Mint, just launch Xchat-Gnome from the menu and it will connect you to the channel.

Timezones are illustrated on the picture below:

Who's in the [LinuxMint] clan?

So far we've got the following members:

[LinuxMint]AK_Dave --> GMT-9 (USA)
[LinuxMint]Joe --> GMT -8 (USA)
[LinuxMint]Edgeofthewoods --> GMT -7 (USA)
[LinuxMint]killuz --> GMT -6 (Mexico)
[LinuxMint]Tdapple --> GMT -6 (USA)
[LinuxMint]DecemberDoom --> GMT -6 (USA)
[LinuxMint]Mosquito --> GMT -5 / EST (USA)
[LinuxMint]Proxima --> GMT -4 (Canada)
[LinuxMint]Avatar --> GMT -3 (Argentina)
[LinuxMint]Clem --> GMT 0 (Ireland)
[LinuxMint]M@C --> GMT 0 (Ireland)
[LinuxMint]bytewax --> GMT 0 (Portugal)
[LinuxMint]Octy --> GMT +1 (Italy)
[LinuxMint]Pup --> GMT +1 (Sweden)
[LinuxMint]Knifer|o0 --> GMT + 5:30 (India)

Anything else?

Don't hesitate to use this forum thread to tell us your favorite servers, favorite weapons, details about you in the game (mostly defensive/offensive/sniper..) etc. Or if there are other things you'd like this clan to do/organize.

See you in the game!
Clem.

[LinuxMint]Clem --> GMT 0 (Ireland)

Play late at night. Offensive rusher M4. Sometimes fog/snipe/tac_googles usually on Abbey/Riyadh maps. Usually play on well populated servers (sort by number of players, ideally #31) :)

Cool, need something to fill up that small space between work and school since the W.o.W-curse was dispelled from my credit card.
So... My tactics would pretty much be spraying bullets around the enemy, preferably with a G36... and hiding behind the team members with my medikit ready.

[LinuxMint]Edgeofthewoods
Edgewood NM USA GMT+7

Oh BTW Here is a .deb file for Urban Terror
http://ppa.launchpad.net/jscinoz/ubuntu ... u6_all.deb
That is the data file then This one for X86:
http://ppa.launchpad.net/jscinoz/ubuntu ... 3_i386.deb
Or if you are running an X64 version of Mint:
http://ppa.launchpad.net/jscinoz/ubuntu ... _amd64.deb

Much better than running though WIne

Hi, I've just installed UT 4.1 using the repo above (but by adding the deb line to sources) and I tried to add Mint as a favourite server using the details in clem's post, but it just did nothing at all. Is there something I'm missing?

The server should appear in the list as a Free for All server (FFA), named Linux Mint (all written in green).

This actually sounds like something I'd be interested in. I haven't played a game in I don't know how long, especially online. I may download it, and get this set up! Hopefully it'll run ok on my Intel X3100 graphics card.
