Breakfast fit for minor dieties (or major ones)

Post by MurphCID »

Here in San Antonio, we have the ultimate breakfast taco/Tex Mex breakfasts. And while I will concede that a well made chorizo Mexicano and potato breakfast taco is sublime, my perfect breakfast has the following:

Hot, strong black tea
Corned beef hash over hashbrows
Grits
German rye bread toast

No eggs since i am allergic to them, but this is a manly breakfast fit for the King of the domicile!

An acceptable alternate is:

Hot, strong black tea
Chorizo Mexicano and potato tacos
a nap.....

Have you noticed that no other meal really gets the billing that a truly great breakfast does? Makes your whole day better.

Nah.... I prefer mine:

- A mug of strong percolated coffee, made by hand from freshly ground(!) Arabica beans. No sugar or other sickening sweet stuff in it, just a dash of milk;

- A thick slice of wholegrain bread, freshly baked at home (we use a bread baking machine), with thick crunchy crusts.
On top of it a layer of delicious local spring honey on it (we buy it from a local beekeeper). You can taste the dandelions of last spring in the honey.

- A second mug of that coffee.

With that in your stomach, you're ready to conquer the world!

Nope, you guys have got it all wrong! :)
Breakfast for me is usually a bowl of cereal, but a "perfect" one is...

Freshly ground and brewed black coffee, neither too strong nor weak, no milk, cream, or sugar.
or
Freshly brewed strong black tea, no milk, cream, or sugar.

Bacon.
Grits (the American South has lots of good stuff, but grits would be one of my favourites*), no cheese.
Biscuits (southern-style again), no gravy.
Over-light or scrambled eggs.
And a blueberry waffle, no syrup.

*Traveling has its advantages, like no shortage of new local foods to try.

The breakfast that I eat before a big day or work is refried beans, rice, a 4 egg Mexican style omelet with three of the yolks separated out, medium hot salsa and a big cup of very strong coffee with some cream and cane sugar.

A glass of orange juice, a blueberry bran muffin, and a banana. Add a little honey on the muffin and you have a great selection of some of the finest foods nature has to offer.

I have a big bowl of Steel-Cut Oats also referred to as Irish or Scottish oats with real butter.
Garlic cloves mixed in real butter on 2 slices of home made rye bread. We also have a bread oven. :)
A pot of black coffee.

Oh, you have it lucky.

When I was growing up, there were 36 of us living in shoebox in middle of road...

*waits patiently to see who gets the reference*

I've never had Chorizo. I won't ask "What is it?" as I'm just as able as the next guy to just freaking Google it. ;-)

I was introduced to breakfast burritos when i worked in a local college's cafeteria. Those lunch ladies had me so spoiled it wasn't funny.

I love grits (and regard with suspicion those who do not...) and all that good-but-probably-not-good-for-you stuff.

Neither one of my breakfasts is lo-cal, lo-fat, and/or healthy. But they taste sooooo good.

In my house, the coffee doesn't brew - I boil water and pour it over a single drip filter cone with three scoops of ground coffee. Some milk or half-and-half, never sugar. The brown sugar goes on the non-instant Cream of Wheat. No butter. Toast and honey. That's at home.

When I have breakfast away from home I always go all out. Chicken fried steak and eggs or biscuits and gravy or bacon and ham omelet. Apple juice and coffee - not mixed together. That happens about once every 3 months; it's all my waistline can afford.

Here's a great way to make Mother's Day breakfast points.

Ah Can't Drink Cawfee

Y'all's talkin' 'bout breakfast bits
thinkin' 'bout it, causin' me fits
'cause ah can't drink cawfee.
abused it too much, see
Pots of it, five or six, maybe eight a day
drank 'til dizzy, 'n seein' stars
least ah was still legal to drive cars.
But ah really liked cawfeee, come what may.
Mah day starts when ah wake up, mah day ends
when ah lay down
So these days ah don't want to offend
body, mind, nor soul of mine
or any other critter, dude.
So ah just grind flax,
spoon in some fruit,
into my yogurt, and call that food.

After being on a frittata making binge for a while (breakfast every day for a month or so...duck eggs, chicken eggs, veggies, mushrooms, etc.), I decided to try something different and I'm not making breakfast stuff for breakfast nowadays. I do things like sauté vegetables and toss them with pasta and olive oil - or just have the veggies sans the starch. A little meat, fish, etc.

It's a dinner party in the morning!

Do I detect a bit of sarcasm on "call that food"?

Nice poem, btw. :)

Hey, Fred, if you look to your relative northwest, there is a person living on the big island who likes American grits. I corrupted her.

No, it's just that *some* people wouldn't call what I eat "food", and the style is for them too, lol.

Thanks! It's the first thing I've written in a while.I used to write (and read) a lot more when I didn't have a computer.

No judgements here, I want to see your favorite breakfast (usually weekends for us, since the week is too busy). Most mornings it is a piece of bread with peanut butter or a protein shake as I run out the door. Weekends however......
