Some people like a large amount of key travel.
Some do not.
Some don't care.

Mechanical-style keyboards feel great on the fingers. However, of fat greater importance to gamers and those who type a lot, MTBF on those keyboards far exceeds any standard keyboard.

Das Keyboard is probably the most famous example.

The funny thing is that this is how keyboards used to be made.
I have to leave so I can get home by the time I arrive.

Presently rocking LinuxMint 19.1 Cinnamon.

I think love of mechanical keyboards is derived more from the tactile sensation under the typist's finger, than from the "clicky noise".

Personally, I don't have have a problem with anyone preferring old mechanical KB's.

Some people point blank refuse to even entertain the idea of rubber dome keys yet they will quite happily thump away at a flat glass smartphone screen all day long. :P

How do these keyboards differ from "normal" keyboards?

Maybe you should ask those people then.

My partner prefers the good old IBM Model M. For him, it's about key travel and tactile feedback. Nothing to argue about, just his personal preferences.

I think this would be an objective advantage, independent of anyone's personal preferences:

I get the feeling some of you have never seen the huge flame wars about keyboards that go from the sublime to the ridiculous that are like 100 pages long. :P

Build quality , Tactical feedback and longevity is perfectly normal thing to discuss for something that can cost in excess of $200 but arguing over such things as LED side glow when backlit or going to the obsessive lengths that all keys have a matching batch code i just don't get. :)

That's true, I don't hang out where you hang out (apart from here). That shouldn't come as much of a surprise, now, should it? It's a big Web out there...

No thanks. I don't hang out there, and that's not by accident. I'm just not interested.

HUH! Image

I have no idea what that even meant , What was reddit?

It was just the first result at Google for Moem of how big and common the subject is on other forums.
