Chrome(ium) or Firefox? Poll.

Post by Lemongrass38 » Tue Jan 17, 2017 2:59 pm

Chrome's usage share is rising, Firefox' is decreasing among people in general:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usage_sha ... b_browsers

I was curious if this is the case among Linux Mint users too (and if so, what are the ratios), so this is why I created this poll. For those who use multiple web browsers, please use your "main" browser in this poll. ;)

As for me, I use Firefox as my main browser, and Chromium for Facebook, *google*, and a few sites more where I'm constantly logged in (I'm always in private mode in Firefox so this couldn't be done in that).

If you have an opinion about this topic, it's welcome. Of course other web browsers are in the poll too.

If you have a specific reason why you prefer one of them, you might also share that here... :) I don't wish to cause dissension, so the goal is not to convince each other, I was just curious.

I prefer Firefox because it can be tweaked well, I can log in to sync my bookmarks among computers without my Google account, open source, and has NoScript, Self-destructing cookies, DownThemAll..., and I can use my bookmarks on Android too.
If your issue is solved, please be so kind and indicate that by editing the topic title in the first post. :)

I couldn't list all browsers, there are some left like Iridium, UC, w3m, I2P,... The maximum number was 10.

For those who haven't tried w3m yet, it's a must. And moon-buggy too (it is not a browser, but the same feeling). 8)

Sure! My main browser is SeaMonkey. I've been using it for years, a lot longer than I've been using Linux.
My secondary browser is Pale Moon, but that's not what you asked.

I mostly use Firefox, but I usually have Chromium open all the time, too. I also use Opera, and Chrome, Konqueror, Maxthon, Otter, and Vivaldi. The last few of those I don't use much; mostly just installed them to try them out. I installed Brave the other day, but haven't really played with it much yet. On low-end computers I have used Midori, and on my Raspberry Pi I use either Midori or Epiphany. On my Android phone, I mostly use Opera.

Palemoon is my main browser, Firefox is my backup, and Chrome and the Tor Browser Bundle I use for specialised tasks. I've also tried Brave and it's really good!
I'm installing Midori now to test.

My main browser is Pale Moon, for a backup I use Firefox. I will never use Chrome, never. I would expect among users of Linux that Chrome's percentage of use would be somewhat lower than that for Windows users.

Firefox with Classic Theme Restorer and some other tweaks to undo the more stupid (in my opinion) decisions made by Mozilla since v28.

I installed NetSurf on the Acer some time back so I could get Firefox working again when we had the bad update and as an emergency backup, but haven't used it since. No Sync capability is a deal-breaker for me.

Chrome? I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. I don't want (or trust) a browser which is written by an advertising / data mining corporation. Another reason for avoiding Chrome is that before I dumped Windows, routinely had to uncheck "Install Google Chrome" & "Set Google Chrome as default" on a number of programs, including AV software; both during installation and when updating. One shouldn't have to go out of ones way to NOT install something! It's one of the reasons I dropped MS's OS and I suspect the primary reason behind its large userbase in Windows.

So it's Firefox. Just they have ctrl+r 'Firefox' 'SeaMonkey'

My secondary browser is Pale Moon, but that's not what you asked.
Thanks for sharing it! I've heard about that only a few times, so I didn't think it's being used in this forum. But as it seems, you and a few more people use it, so it must be good then.

I've tried Pale Moon, it's really good and fast, but I really lack my extensions... :) Everybody has their own taste.

I hear you! That's why it's my secondary browser, not the primary one. SeaMonkey has a lot more extensions available.

Firefox.
I Disagree with the latest developments, but the extensions compensate that (classic theme restorer, mentioned previously, being one example).

Firefox mostly, sometimes Chrome, and even less Opera and Slimjet. Firefox is not the fastest browser (Chrome, Slimjet and Opera are faster) but it's the most versatile and useful, with the appropriate add-ons.
Linux everywhere. Active Distros in my many computers: LM17.3 (Cinnamon, Xfce); LM18.1 (Cinnamon,Xfce); LMDE 2 (Mate), MXLinux (Xfce), Debian 9 (Xfce).
