Re: Greatest Rock and Roll band EVER!
I saw Blue Oyster Cult at the Norwester 76 festival in Stateline, Idaho, on June 4, 1976. I was, as they say, in an altered mental status. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. It was an awesome show! Unfortunately, the promoter ran off with the money, and when the bands realized they weren't going to get paid, they all packed up and left. Then the fans figured out that there wasn't going to be any more music, and a riot ensued. My brother and I helped BOC get their stuff off the stage before the rioters destroyed it all.

Re: Greatest Rock and Roll band EVER!
It's funny how naming the "Greatest Rock and Roll Band EVER" turns into a list.
The Black Crowes would be somewhere near the top of the list.
I tried to make a list of the "Top 100 Rock and Roll Songs Ever", and the list had 292 songs on it when I was done.
Top 20
1) Deep Purple - Child in Time - HD 1970 Number 1 for me. always will be...
2) Guns N Roses - Knocking On Heaven's Door - absolute perfection.
3) Aerosmith - Remember (Walking In The Sand) Aerosmith's best cover song!
4) Nazareth - Love Hurts
5) Cream: White Room
6) Led Zeppelin - In My Time Of Dying
7) Led Zeppelin - Kashmir
Led Zeppelin - Since I've Been Loving You
9) Joan Jett - Crimson & Clover
10) Percy Sledge - When a Man Loves A Woman honorable mention: Bette Midler's live version
11) Bad Company - Feel Like Making Love
12) Derek and the Dominos - Bellbottom blues
13) Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
14) Joe Bonamassa - Blues Deluxe - you can't do blues any better than this !
15) Def Leppard -"Pour Some Sugar on Me"
16) Rightous Brothers - Unchained Melody
17) Scorpions - Still Loving You
18) Stevie Ray Vaughn - Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)
19) Uriah Heep - July Morning (live performances) - check it out, richyrich!
20) Aerosmith: Angel
Somehow, Metallica - Enter Sandman did not make the Top 20 list. I may have to re-order things to fit that in...

Re: Greatest Rock and Roll band EVER!
Got to agree 100%
Rush.
There was no one quite like them in the 70s. I graduated from KISS, to Styx and Foreigner and a few others, but when I heard Rush, my first album being "Fly By Night", their music was so complex and powerful, then came "Hemispheres" a bit later and I still think it is complex and beautiful. The song "Circumstances", never get tired of it, or the band for that matter.

Re: Greatest Rock and Roll band EVER!
Before I add my two cents, a disclaimer: I admit that my music collection is more along the electronic and/or pop genres.
Even so, I happen to have a couple of rock-oriented gems in regular rotation on my iPod:

- Emerson Lake & Palmer: "From The Beginning" from Trilogy is sublime.
- Ace Frehley: His is easily the best of Kiss's four solo discs, and "Fractured Mirror" is an instrumental masterpiece.

Where is Beatles, Rolling stones, Creedence Clearwater Revival?
Oh, Creedence Clearwater Revival! It is greatest Rock'n'roll band. Every time I listen that cover my hair is rised.

Lots of great groups posted here, right know I'm listening to Peter Frampton: Do You Feel Like We Do (live version) on EKR via radiotray, sounds pretty decent to me!

Re: Greatest Rock and Roll band EVER!
Not exactly rock and roll but I'm a big fan of Christopher Cross. Most people don't dig any deeper than Sailing or Arthur's Theme ("when you get caught between the moon and New York City") but those who do are rewarded with a rich and varied body of work that's still going strong today (12 albums and counting). Here are a couple of his lesser known songs:
A Chance for Heaven (theme for the 1984 Olympic Games):

Re: Greatest Rock and Roll band EVER!
My all time fav. has always been "The Eagles". Seems they came along at the exact right time. Our country needed to chill after the turbulent 60's and early 70's.
List of my top 15:
1. Eagles
2. Jefferson Airplane
3. CCR
4. Steppenwolf
5. Jimi Hendrix
6. Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band
7. Lovin Spoonful
8. ELO
9. REO Speedwagon
10. The Doors
11. The Beach Boys
12. Arlo Guthrie
13. Queen
14. The Mamas & Papas
15. Bad Company
Of course, when I think of travelin music - it must be Queen, CCR and The Eagles. Can't believe all the miles I've driven to their tunes.
Yeah, I know I'm old... LOL

Re: Greatest Rock and Roll band EVER!
I started thinking of the "Best R&R Band Ever" by decade.
The 50's: The King of Rock & Roll - Elvis Presley
The 60's: The Beatles
The 70's: Led Zepplin
The 80's: Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble
The 90's: Guns N Roses
The 00's: Split between Black and White - this spot shared by The Black Keys and The White Stripes. The millennials have their very own Frank Zappa in Jack White - amazing talent and shocking originality.
Current: Joe Bonnamassa - takes the "Guitar God" title away from Clapton, Van Halen, and even Stevie Ray.
