I saw Blue Oyster Cult at the Norwester 76 festival in Stateline, Idaho, on June 4, 1976. I was, as they say, in an altered mental status. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. It was an awesome show! Unfortunately, the promoter ran off with the money, and when the bands realized they weren't going to get paid, they all packed up and left. Then the fans figured out that there wasn't going to be any more music, and a riot ensued. My brother and I helped BOC get their stuff off the stage before the rioters destroyed it all.

The Black Crowes would be somewhere near the top of the list.

Rush.
There was no one quite like them in the 70s. I graduated from KISS, to Styx and Foreigner and a few others, but when I heard Rush, my first album being "Fly By Night", their music was so complex and powerful, then came "Hemispheres" a bit later and I still think it is complex and beautiful. The song "Circumstances", never get tired of it, or the band for that matter.

Before I add my two cents, a disclaimer: I admit that my music collection is more along the electronic and/or pop genres.
Even so, I happen to have a couple of rock-oriented gems in regular rotation on my iPod:

• Emerson Lake & Palmer: "From The Beginning" from Trilogy is sublime.
• Ace Frehley: His is easily the best of Kiss's four solo discs, and "Fractured Mirror" is an instrumental masterpiece.

I also listen to a couple of ZZ Top songs on rare occasion; however, those came from their 80s "pop" phase, and for many of you rock purists they probably wouldn't count.

Not exactly rock and roll but I'm a big fan of Christopher Cross. Most people don't dig any deeper than Sailing or Arthur's Theme ("when you get caught between the moon and New York City") but those who do are rewarded with a rich and varied body of work that's still going strong today (12 albums and counting). The 70's: Led Zepplin
The 80's: Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble
The 90's: Guns N Roses
The 00's: Split between Black and White - this spot shared by The Black Keys and The White Stripes. The millennials have their very own Frank Zappa in Jack White - amazing talent and shocking originality.
Current: Joe Bonnamassa - takes the "Guitar God" title away from Clapton, Van Halen, and even Stevie Ray.
