NASA just released a ton of software for free

Post by jimallyn »

I haven't searched through it all by any means (barely scratched the surface), but there's probably some useful stuff there.

This is so cool. :)
Many companies need computational fluid dynamics software. Like Cart3D. :)

Edit:
This is a U.S. Government system and is for authorized users only.
Couldn't create account nor I could download it.
If your issue is solved, please be so kind and indicate that by editing the topic title in the first post. :)

Well, that sucks. I didn't try downloading anything.

Some software are restricted for gov use or for US users.
But a lot of them are free for everyone. This is great!
If it ain't broke, fix it until it is.

Can't they just get this from NSA?

Indeed! According to what I have read, NASA just published its 2017-2018 software catalog.
Among the list are apps, code libraries, tools, that anyone can download and use.

I think the folks immediately above me here have already nailed it, but I'd like to add that this is the largest honey-pot I think we've seen come across our screens in a long time.

Who in either their right mind or in good conscience could possibly trust any of this software, given everything we know these days?

If NASA is truly serious, they can open the source and publish the code — all of it — and let the community peer-review it and audit it for safety and security. Otherwise... sorry, NASA, but we cannot trust your bosses.
Please be polite and remember to mark your fixed problem [SOLVED].

Presently running Linux Mint Cinnamon 19.3.

Know when what you're doing is trying to fit a square peg in a round hole, and STOP.

Still looking for a new job.

My favourite NASA software would have to be "COLOSSUS 2A", the source code to the Apollo 11 lunar module:

Funny you mention that, at first glance read it as... "NSA just released..." :)

Searching their software site for 'open source' returns 200 hits. And NSA open sourced its SELinux years ago.
