Why Won't Microsoft Take My Money?

Post by Pierre »

now there is an apt Title Best method for getting Microsoft office?
viewtopic.php?f=90&t=241631&p=1298864#p1298864
but, this is not relevant to that issue, so this is a new post:

this Lady, who I've been helping for years & years,
Spilt Her Mug of Coffee All Over Her Laptop
( don't do this, folks, just don't )
Yes - it's stuffed. .. ..

/Start Rant
so, she bought a Brand New Laptop & waited until I'd come over, to unbox it.
1/ the setup of the new win-10, took maybe an hour.

2/ the setup of the existing eMail account into MS Outlook took 90min .. ..
because of the ISPs changed settings, when they went from inhouse to outlook.com,
& just about everyone complained about their Private Data being stored in the USA .
so they brought it back inhouse again, so those settings were changed three times in five years.
- confusing at best, you can't Google it, as you get some results from yesteryear, that are wrong.
& their support desk, just refers you to the internet, to "setup your eMail account".
finally did get some tech support dude on the 'ph, who was just as confused as myself.
- but we got it working - eventually.

3/ but the real issue was that the New Laptop came pre-loaded with MS Office 2016
and try as we might, there was just no way to activate it:
- the existing MS account was tied to the old Laptop's version of Office.
- you could only activate if your copy was downloaded with your MS account
this version was pre-loaded onto the New Laptop.
and you couldn't tie the two together, Just No Way !.

even the MS Chat people - Five of them, eventually, couldn't help out.
nor could the actual MS Support Agent, who was on the 'ph with us, for another hour,
- their solution, was to 'open a new MS account' and try that way.

so then, when purchasing a Product Key, for the pre-loaded version,
the MS Store wouldn't accept any Debit Cards as payment,
- then those cards couldn't be removed from the MS account, even though they weren't used.
finally Paypal was tried & that worked, but the MS account delivery address was different from the P/P address.
& the MS account wouldn't accept the corrected delivery address.
- even though this was a Digital Purchase, and didn't need any physical delivery address.
so that was another MS Built Brick Wall.

actually, you know the Real Issue:
- all that is needed - - is a MS Product Key
why is that so critical?

because the MS Office Trial Period will expire in Five Days time,
( remember, this is a Brand New Laptop, that was unboxed, this morning )
not the expected 30 Day Trial - - so the MS Office 2016 needs to be Activated.
like real soon.

/End Rant

- - to be continued, tomorrow, after this Lady goes to a local Big Box Store,
and buys a "card" for MS Office 2016, that hopefully comes with MS Product Key.

What a time consuming problem! I had issues with Microsoft Office last year when I was taking classes, the ribbon or what ever you call it would just disappear and never return! After loosing all my work twice I decided to try LibreOffice to do the assignment and just save as a .doc. Not only did LibreOffice get the job done, it defaulted to the format I needed with no intervention from me.

My sister had the exact same problem but rather than try LIbreOffice she used her old laptop that had an older version of Windows and Office. I remember having massive problems upgrading Office when I worked in IT too, it was extremely problematic to say the least.

I would be interested how your problem gets resolved and I understand why the user needs MS Office specifically.

Are you sure that the Office Trial is for 30 days and not just 5?

Rinse the old laptop thoroughly with water. If you have a lot of minerals in your water, used distilled water, which you can buy in gallon jugs at the grocery store. After you've rinsed enough to get all the coffee out, repeat with isopropyl alcohol (pure, or 99 percent, if you can find it). Shake as much of the alcohol as you can out of the laptop, tipping it this way and that to get it all to drain. Wait for the alcohol to evaporate completely. Laptop will probably work now. If there was no sugar in the coffee, the water rinse may not be needed. Sugar doesn't dissolve in alcohol, so you need to rinse it out with water first. I used to own an electronics repair shop, and we used to rescue all sorts of items this way.

Final step: install Linux on the laptop.

This whole thread really made me chuckle. Thanks for that, everyone, because I needed it after today at work.

Hmmm. When things came into the shop with liquids spilled in them, we usually disassembled them to see where the spill had got to, then just cleaned as needed. I would probably try disassembling it for inspection before I'd dunk it. Look for anything that might be damaged by getting water in it, like speakers, for example. Then make the call based on what you see. But sometimes we wound up disassembling then running water over the boards and scrubbing with a soft toothbrush. Never done a laptop, though. And again, water is probably only needed if the coffee had sugar in it. You can also buy spray cans with solvents that are intended for cleaning circuit boards. Have a look here:

http://www.gcelectronics.com/order/catd ... sp?CatID=3

Some of them will harm some plastics, so be sure to check the data sheet for that. I wish I could remember the name of the various cleaners we used at the shop. Ordered the stuff by the case. But that was 10 years-ish ago.

I took an electronics class in high school, and the teacher used to work for a television station, and he would pull boards out of equipment and put them in the dishwasher in the break room. He said he never had one fail from that.

...

Oh, yeah, we also used to use various chemicals from Chemtronics. https://www.chemtronics.com/ You could probably buy their stuff from Digikey or MCM. digikey.com mcmelectronics.com

so, anyway, the lady went back to the Store & got that "card".
- gee - I've missing the 'old days' - where you got a "real disk".
then fired up MS Outlook & typed in the new ProductKey
and got logged into the MS account to register this MS office version.

so much easier, than yesterday was.
& that worked, just fine.
- - so why didn't the Store employee "upsell" that new Laptop, with an MSOffice "card" ??.
would have been so much easier, than having to go back & get it.

you'd think that buying a new machine would solve all your computer issues,
- but you'd be wrong - - that's just the start of your woes.

now - it's what to do with the old Laptop,
pull it apart & see just what's gotten into it. .. ..
& salvage the data that's on it's HDD.

You're expecting "give-a-****" out of people from this generation? Good luck with that.

Try asking for help on these boards. You'll find plenty of people who "give-a-****" about fixing your problem. Don't blame the young-uns for dodgy business practices.
