Going to try and squeeze a PCIe x1 card inbetween to drive the display and leave the two gtx's to fold.

Re: Folding@home-Team Linux Mint-76140
Did FAHClient detect your second card right away? I thought I read somewhere that sometimes xorg.conf had to have a second 'phantom' monitor setup before the card was detected.
Re: Folding@home-Team Linux Mint-76140
The only problem I encountered was with coolbits not working on the second card. I'll get to that in a minute.greerd wrote:Did FAHClient detect your second card right away? I thought I read somewhere that sometimes xorg.conf had to have a second 'phantom' monitor setup before the card was detected.
I shut the computer down, fitted the gtx960 in the x16 slot and the gtx950 in the x4 slot. Then I started it up again and configured a 2nd slot in FAHControl for gpu and it was away and running. I didnt need to reinstall anything.
Regarding getting coolbits running on the 2nd card, this is where I had to resort to the terminal.
Code: Select all
sudo nvidia-xconfig --enable-all-gpus
sudo nvidia-xconfig --cool-bits=12

Re: Folding@home-Team Linux Mint-76140
Hi all,
I built my computer in 2014, and it ran well on folding at home. Its an Intel i7 4790K. It always ran well and managed about 60000 points per day. I decided to purchase a GTX 1070 GPU, which I duly fitted. I deleted the CPU and just ran the GPU. For a full month everything worked faultlessly. Then I started to get "work units not assigned" like a lot of people. I thought that I would start up the CPU folding to help out with the GPU. The idea was to increase the points per day. It did not. The points slowly fell from 650,000 down to 544,000 a day.
I took the side door of and felt the heat that was coming from the GPU exhaust. I measured it and it read 92F. This heat was being created inside the computer case, not exactly what we aim for. I decided to have a go at upgrading the cooling. I purchased 4 new fans and a dust filter for the Corsair 600T case side window.
The case before I started work I first changed the 2 top fans with new ones. I then removed the glass panel in the case door and replaced it with a mesh one. I mounted the 2 remaining new fans into the mesh one on top of the other. The idea was that the bottom fan would push air under the GPU and the top fan would extract the hot air from the GPU air vent.
I would make an air deflector to channel the air into the correct position.
Before I fitted the GPU After the fitting of the GPU continued

the mesh grill with 2 fans fitted
Best regards Keith
the orange air baffle I made to separate air in and air out
after the new fans were fitted
It is nice to have it finished and running again.

Re: Folding@home-Team Linux Mint-76140
Yeah it's great to see what can be achieved with a little thought. My case has 7 fans and the coolers on the gtx's are the reference type, they suck the air in and blow it over the heatsinks and out the case at the back. The input and output fans have speed controllers on them. Currently the 960 generates more heat so the fan is manually set at 70%, the 950 runs at 63deg on auto same temp on the 960.

That would probably work for F@H, as it doesn't use much PCI bandwidth, if any at all.

Hi, found a really useful article about tuning your nvidia cards.

Re: Folding@home-Team Linux Mint-76140
I just set my power limit to 100 watts from 120, PPD dropped by 3K.. So set it to 130 Watts, seems to have climbed another 2K with an increase in GPU temp of 1.C.
My GTX 1060 is watercooled.
Can changing the power limit trick GPU boost?
Edit - 5 minutes later:
PPD increased by 7K. The power draw is very erratic I see.

Re: Folding@home-Team Linux Mint-76140
Well i tried to join the FAH forums. they rejected my 2 posts because of my sig. My sig said Team Linux Mint-76140. followed with "for FAH support/chat: (insert link to tis thread)"
The boxes that give user and team data give more information than my sig. And the link is to a support thread. The Mod is taking that as something that can be seen as recruiting. there is no way to reply to the Mod message to explain any of it.
I suppose Mint forum links are not allowed because we have a team? Despite folks asking for support for Mint?

Re: Folding@home-Team Linux Mint-76140
I joined a few weeks back because I wanted insight into graphics card configs. However I never set up a sig as I didn't see any one else using them.

Re: Folding@home-Team Linux Mint-76140
This is the section from the F@H Forum that might be relevant,
Recruiting/Promoting : We run a team-neutral forum and offer support for anyone, without regard to team affiliation, or organizations. Attempts to encourage others to join your team/organization (explicit or implicit) are prohibited in all of the general forums.
If you wish to discuss a Teams/Organizations idea (in general), this will (in most cases) be allowed, if you follow certain protocols.
Do Not use the name/team # of the Team/Organization, directly in your posts.
Do Not use links that point to the Team/Organization in ANY form.
1 and 2 apply to everyone, regardless of if you are affiliated with that Team/Organization or not.
Use appropriate wording, to remain neutral. Words such as -- Team, Teams, They, Them, Us... Etc...
And that includes not having your username as the organization as well!!! That IS considered part of the post.

Re: Folding@home-Team Linux Mint-76140
yeah thats what they PM'd me. It only applies based on a persons interpretation. We have one thread. this is a mint forum not an FAH forum. In our one thread, we support folks who use Mint and FAH.
I solved this by logging off FAH. and never logging in again.
Now my first post to start this thread has no recruitment in it at all. Simply just what is and some how to set up FAH. The only team descriptor is in the title, which is the same information from the data sig which they allow. Nowhere in the thread is there even instructions to use the teams ID for your user Id. that is it.
When people use interpretations loosely, they only get one thing from me... the large finger.

This might be of use to those of us who run Linux, rebooting a stalled gpu.
