Renaming an Apple Magic Mouse outside of running Mac OS X

Postby Portreve » Fri Sep 15, 2017 10:11 am

I have an Apple Magic Mouse which many, many moons ago when I got it, I was still running Mac OS X full time, and I renamed it from its default.

I wish to put it back to the default name because I intend to get rid of it and don't want my identity associated with it in any way.

Because I am not running Mac OS X, it's not the simple matter it would otherwise be, so far as I know.

So, my question to the community is: Does anyone know how to rename one of these things in GNU+Linux? I'm assuming it would be a terminal thing, which is fine.

Thanks in advance!

UPDATE:

There is a terminal utility called bt-device. In theory this would be the sort of utility to do such things as renaming Bluetooth-connected devices. However, it looks as though it cannot actually rename a device, as it lists the device property "name" as being ro, which I take to mean read-only. And, in any event, trying to rename the mouse results in an error that what I'm trying to do is basically invalid.

I'm going to take the lazy guy's way out and head over to my local BestBuy and use one of their Macs, running Mac OS X, to pair to it and change the name.

UPDATE #2:

Mission accomplished. I never thought I'd wind up using Best Buy as a "utility" but, well... at least it worked.

No thanks. When I am in a position to, I'll be selling off my current MBP and buying other hardware, preferably something from Purism or System76.
