Microsoft and Linux

I switched to Mint because of what this Evil Dictatorship called Microsoft was doing to me because I liked Win 7 and I've never looked back. I now run Cinnamon 18.2 which is very stable and most of all user friendly...much faster than Windoze ever was.

If you think Microsoft is so good...take a look at this...it'll open your eyes...

As for this Forum...I've found it very helpful...but you have to do the learning yourself (That's me) and if you get into trouble that's what this Forum is for. Some people like to do stupid things to see what happens...it must be very frustrating for Helpers.

Years ago I flagged on the Ubuntu forum by a mod for referring to Windows as Windoze.

Now that Ubuntu and Microsoft are in Bed together and taking long warm showers together...you'd get a life time ban now.

The implication that Microsoft is spying on us by means of Ubuntu, is utter nonsense.

Yes, it's bloody nonsense and spreading of FUD:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fear,_unc ... _and_doubt

Linux is open source software; it's therefore impossible to effectively hide spying software in it. Sooner or later it would be discovered. So a reputable distro builder like Canonical wouldn't ever risk damaging its reputation that way.

So stop spreading this FUD.

Mod note:
This topic was split off from a different one where it was wildly off-topic. It was impossible to untangle it fully from the original thread so the result is a bit frayed.
If this discussion needs to be had at all, it should not happen in someone else's thread about a completely different subject.

To be fair, that didn't stop Canonical from implementing the shopping lens, which caused quite a few negative reactions in relation to Ubuntu's treatment of user privacy, but it's also much more limited in scope than suggesting MS can spy on everything a user does on Ubuntu.

True, but that's a bit like comparing apples to oranges.... :)

The shopping lens wasn't hidden, it was easy to disable it (Canonical provided an easily accessible switch for that), and it was indeed limited in scope. In my opinion the only thing that was bad about it, was that originally it was opt-out instead of opt-in.

What I don't like is when people like the bloke I was replying to, are spreading FUD about Ubuntu. It's a fine distro, it's a giant on whose shoulders Mint is standing, and we should be thankful for the excellent free software that Canonical gives us. It deserves better than to be smeared with unjustified FUD.

That is fair comment , but it has been a thorny issue , FUD or otherwise .

There is a good discussion article here , which covers the major issues ( it's from early 2016 but still a good read )
http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2016/01/ubun ... bled-16-04

It was enough to start Richard Stallman off ..... but then it doesn't take much :)
..... and I'm a Stallman fan , on the whole .

And I have to say that on my first experience of Ubuntu I saw the Amazon icon in the dock and thought " What the hell is that doing there ? "
OK , so it's part of the Canonical business model , but I'm not having any of that stuff in any OS that I use .

Yes , it should have been opt-in , but realistically , how many folks would have chosen the opt-in , or even noticed it ?
An opt-in policy would certainly have hurt the revenue stream !

I don't know if it was a lifetime ban, but I for kicked off of UBForums myself. They can be quite an intolerant, tow the corporate line bunch...

Honestly, I don't even remember any longer what it was over. I got kicked off sometime in 2011 I think.

I think I got kicked off the Ubuntu forums when I complained about Unity. I couldnt believe that they didnt offer Unity desktop as an option first to work the kinks out and then at a later date adopt it as their main de.

Really, I only use the ubuntu server package on my firewall computer. Everything else is Minty Green :)

Facts please. Undeniable proof that Microsoft is spying on us by means of Canonical (Ubuntu) and/or the Linux Foundation.

Otherwise it's still FUD that you're spouting:
