How do I "Save as HTML" a CuriousCat user's page? (The downloaded html shows a 404 upon opening)

Post by pepperminty »

Open any desktop browser (Firefox, Chrome, Opera, etc),
Go to https://curiouscat.me/curiouscat
Save the webpage as html
Go to the downloaded html file in your hard drive and open it in your browser.
Notice how it says
Error 404
Not Found
/home/meDownloads/curiouscat%20%E2%80%93%20Curious%20Cat2.html doesn't exist. Woops!
If this was supposed to exist, please contact us
Note, this is an error page INSIDE the html page.

So my question is, how can I download an offilne version of a CuriousCat user's Q&As? I don't need pictures. But I prefer html over a screenshot, because with a screenshot, you can't work with the text.

I got the same response. No idea.
I have been saving HTML's for some years and never had this happen.

Hi "pepperminty",

In my Linux Mint KDE 18.2 system using Firefox, I went to your webpage, clicked "File", "Save As", "Webpage Complete" (html), and it saved perfectly. I was able to open it as well. Using this method creates the HTML file and sub-folders with the HTML document's elements; this can get confusing and difficult to manage (copy or move) if you save a lot of webpages, because you will not easily know which folders belong to which HTML file.

For saving or archiving webpages I prefer the PDF format because all of the webpage's content is saved into one file, and the text can usually be selected and copied in most PDF viewers. In Linux Mint, you can print to file which creates a PDF file, or you can install "cups-pdf" and print to PDF (I prefer this because it saves to a PDF folder automatically with page title). There are also browser add-ons (extensions) like the wonderful "Fireshot" that can print entire webpages to PDF or image files.

Tip note: You can copy (highlight) any text click (Ctrl+Insert) and or select all text (ctrl+a then ctrl+Insert) on a webpage to your computer's memory (clipboard), open a new text file and just paste it, and save the text file if you want.

Update: I went into Opera and brought up that webpage, saved it as "Webpage Complete", and when I tried to open it, I got the same error you did.

I added a "Save Text to file" add-on, hit "ctrl+a" to select all on the webpage, right clicked and saved all the text to a file which worked. This add-on could also save the page as a "zip" archive which also worked, but I could not open it with my default archiving application (Ark), I had to use PeaZip?
https://addons.opera.com/en/extensions/ ... display=en

Google Chrome (firejailed or not) had the same problems...

This Hungry Panda: Clipboard & Notepad addon worked, selected text, right click send to Hungry Panda, click the Panda icon and save to file, etc...

Hope this helps ...

Hi phd21. Do you mind archiving the files and sharing? I'd like to take a look.

HI "pepperminty",

Here you go, I created this archive from the webpage file and its related folder, just click the link below to download it. In browsers like Google Chrome, Opera, Firefox, Slimjet, etc... on a new tab, hit "Ctrl+O" to open a file stored on your computer. Otherwise, you can open it in any HTML editor...

phd21, thanks for sharing the pcloud-hosted archive file .I downloaded and extracted and it works! How did you do that? I did as you said in the quote above. The only difference is that I'm using Cinnamon, and you are on KDE. I chose File>SaveAs>WebpageComplete(HTML) too, like you did, but I got the weird 404 error. What version of Firefox are you using? I'm on 56.0 64bit.

Linux Mint 18.2 Cinnamon here - Firefox 56.0 (64-bit). I did the same as you two did and I got the error page too. I wonder if this is a Firefox bug.

Revian, thanks for your input. I got the peculiar 404 Error message with other browsers too. How is it for you with other browsers?

Hi "pepperminty",

I did that in standard Firefox 56 for Linux just the way I explained before (File->Save As->Web page Complete). I saved the web page to my "/Downloads" folder because I use the "firejail" sandboxing application.

Like I also said, the non-Firefox browsers are giving me that same weird "404" message you got.

I think this is because of this particular website's design, maybe that pop-up message at the bottom interferes, but that would require checking other websites, which I have not done yet.

This is worth posting on the various browser's development and bug tracker websites. We should be able to save the web pages as HTML like before. Perhaps the websites are purposely try to prevent that now?

The other methods I brought up will allow users to copy web page text, or print to PDF, etc... With this particular website, when I printed to PDF I could not select text like you can with other wesbites (yet), but it does create perfect PDF copies of the web page(s).

I also have a lot of Firefox add-ons (which most people are not supposed to do), but I am a computer expert and I try (test & experiment with) various add-ons. I do not think that any of the Firefox add-ons I have installed would make a difference with saving webpages through the File->Save As option.

FYI: Here is a current list of my Firefox add-ons which I could not easily provide without installing this "extension-list-dumper-2" addon in link below. Keep in mind that some of these add-ons are part of Firefox and were not added by me. Unfortunately when Firefox 57 comes out soon, a lot of these add-ons will not work anymore because they are "legacy" add-ons.

Newer Firefox versions are stopping the previous MHT web page saving options and apparently other archiving options for some reason? I do not know if that is being replaced with some other save web page options. See last screenshot below.

KDE users do have a Plasma version of Firefox and Thunderbird which I usually use, but I did not use that for your post. After re-installing my Firefox for KDE Plasma I re-tested the "File -> Save As" on this website and it still worked.
