Cats and harmonicas

Post by Jeffex » Sat Dec 02, 2017 11:42 pm

When I start to play my harmonica, my cat goes crazy, immediately comes over to me and jumps up on my lap, then proceeds to walk around in circles on my lap, he is very excited by the sound.
Has anyone else had this experience?

Fortunately not. I haven't ever found myself in your lap.

There have been many studies on the melodic effects on people as well as on animals.
It has been proved that the surrounding parasitic noise in our reality needs rational hits through melodic associations. This induces not only a better self-esteem but also influences the emotional state for the better.
And yes, cats also have emotions.

It is not unusual or abnormal behavior. Cats have very sensitive hearing, and the harmonica could be making sounds that are inaudible to humans. Your cat may be reacting to a strange sound it does not understand.

The tone itself may in play - a harmonica sounds like feline vocalizations, and your cat may be looking for the other cat. I imagine your cat would react similarly if you played a melodica or the bagpipes. I once had a cat that would "sing" every time the phone or doorbell rang.
