get rid of image magick. it is evil

Post by flatiron » Sat Dec 23, 2017 11:13 pm

This evil program called "ImageMagick" somehow made my program tabs disappear. The tabs that appear on the bar thing at the bottom of the screen when you open a program. I right clicked on the image magick tab thing. And somehow all the programs disappeared from the bar and I could not get them back.

I right clicked the bar and selected trouble shoot and then restore all settings to default and my program tabs reappeared. That only resets the bar settings, right?

image magick wouldn't close when I pressed on the x.

This program is evil. took forever to undo the damage it did.

Moderator: moved here from Suggestions & New Ideas, as this is not a rational suggestion or idea, it's a rant. Furthermore, it's a duplicate rant. I deleted the other post.

get rid of image magick. it is evil
get rid of? that's on you.
This is not installed with your Mint.
You must have added additional apps and this was part of them
fwiw
I have never had bad experience with ImageMagick and find it a useful utility

It was not installed as part of any other apps. It was in there from the beggining. All I have installed are xfburn, basero, and psensor.

I've not used Mint for quite some time, but a few programs can depend on imagemagick, although it depends on your system (I can think of one that always pulls in imagemagick... Play on Linux). There's a few ways to discover what in your system depends on imagemagick:

Just open Synaptic - type imagemagick in the search box - right click->properties->Dependencies Tab - select Dependants from the drop down.

Depending on the Distro - from the terminal:

aptitude why imagemagick
rdepends imagemagick

there's a few others too, including apt-cache and apt-rdepends, have a look at the respective man pages online.

I am pretty sure ImageMagick is part of the default LM installation - it is a dependency for a lot of packages, and it is a suggested dependency for LibreOffice. I do not recall ever installing it, but it has been part of all of my LM installations.

I also find it to be useful. The convert, mogrify, and montage tools are an essential part of my photo processing workflow.

ImageMagick (Display Q16) tool can be a bit evil at times, although I think the guilty party most likely is Mime Types. It can make a mess of file associations.

Panel. Using the correct terms makes it easier for others to help you.

Hello, flatiron.

No, Image Magic is not evil. And it does not empty the bottom panel automatically.
flatiron wrote:This evil program called "ImageMagick" somehow made my program tabs disappear.
Unlikely. It does not do so here. It does not do so for the other users who replied in this thread. Suggests it happened to you only.
I right clicked on the image magick tab thing. And somehow all the programs disappeared from the bar and I could not get them back.
PEBCAK, this suggests. What you wanted to click on may not have been what you actually did click on.
The context menu of Image Magic in the bottom panel offers "close" as its last item here.
Maybe by accident you did not click on the Image Magic item by accident, but on an empty space in the bottom panel and selected "close" there, thus closing the bottom panel object named "taskbar" by accident.

Exact details depend on your desktop environment, your bottom panel configuration and on whether panel modifications are locked by default or permitted by default.
I right clicked the bar and selected trouble shoot and then restore all settings to default and my program tabs reappeared. That only resets the bar settings, right?
Correct.
image magick wouldn't close when I pressed on the x.
Hm. Cannot reproduce here. But this does not mean Image Magic might not have refused to close on your system.
This program is evil.
No, it is not. The userinterface is a bit different from what users will know. But this is where its evilness ends.
took forever to undo the damage it did.
If this statement were correct, you would not have your bottom panel back to normal operation, yet. Plus, the time needed to recover from an incorrect action always also depends on one's own level of expertise. Next time you will be faster.

Regards,
Karl

Code: Select all

$ locate mogrif
/usr/share/bash-completion/completions/mogrify
But:

Code: Select all

$ mogrif
No command 'mogrif' found, did you mean:
Command 'mogrify' from package 'imagemagick' (main)
Command 'mogrify' from package 'graphicsmagick-imagemagick-compat' (universe)
mogrif: command not found
I think this'll show what depends on imagemagick:

Code: Select all

apt-cache rdepends imagemagick
IIRC, it removed some stuff - cups, some dvd program - that many people might want.

But also, from synaptic, you might be able to replace it:
"GraphicsMagick provides a set of command-line applications to manipulate
image files. It is a fork of the ImageMagick project and therefore offers
a similar set of features, but puts a larger emphasis on stability.

With this package installed, the GraphicsMagick command line tools can
be executed like their ImageMagick counterparts. It allows one to migrate
scripts from ImageMagick to GraphicsMagick without any code changes."
As with imagemagick itself, they get confused about the actual name of their package:
"GraphicsMagick" is really "graphicsmagick-imagemagick-compat".

The program 'mogrify' can be found in the following packages:

 * graphicsmagick-imagemagick-compat
Try: sudo apt install <selected package>

Never tried it before. Just did and it is a mess IMHO. I even had to kill the process to get out of it :?

Removing it may break CUPS

Yeah, MOEM, if I knew the right term I would have used it. Panel. Panel panel panel. Okay.

And what is mogrify?

And what could I right click on in the panel that would make firefox and other programs disappear from it? I still cannot figure out how that happened.

Also, when I right click on the panel, then troubleshoot then restore all settings to default, that only resets the panel settings, right?

You could have removed the 'window list' applet. That's the one that shows the programs you have running as buttons on the panel.

Yes, that's right.
And since 'window list' is among the default set of applets, that would bring the buttons back.
