Seeking correct caddy size [Solved]

Post by norm.h »

I'm trying to establish the correct caddy to take an HDD from an old laptop.

The HDD is a Western Digital [WD800AJS] SATA1.
Its dimensions are 4" [100mm] long, 2 3/4" [70mm] wide and 10mm thick.

All the advertised caddies seem to refer to either 3.5" or 2.5", and I assume this is the width, but neither match the size of my HDD.

Any advice will be welcome - thanks in advance.

Laptops have 2.5" HDDs. But the Western Digital Caviar Blue WD800AJS 80GB is a 3.5" internal HDD, which is for a desktop.

The sizes I quoted are correct but I still can't reconcile them to those quoted in adverts.

I saw some on Amazon under $10 that handle both sizes.

``3.5" or 2.5" and I assume this is the width`` It's the diameter of the spinning disk, but it usually implies one of the two standard sizes. You can't spin a 3.5" diameter disk in a 2.75" wide case, so you have a 2.5" drive there.

Thanks for that clarification.
One last question - are all 2.5" drives the same external dimensions?

"are all 2.5" drives the same external dimensions?" Er... probably yes. I only have 2 to look at...
Year 2000 12GB PATA 2.5" drive is 8mm x 68.5mm x 99mm
Year 2008 160GB SATA 2.5" drive is 8mm x 69.5mm x 100mm
...both with 8 off M3 mounting holes in similar positions.
